1066 The Battle for Middle Earth | Excellent Popular History

You’d perhaps not watch 1066: The Battle for Middle Earth if you read the poor, pointless and pretentious review by Sam Wollaston in The Guardian. Ignore him, he’s an obvious agenda.

This tired hack wants us to know his Anglo-Saxon is rusty, he's likely more educated than his readers, he’s been to Glastonbury, knows about hippie culture and Heavy Metal. Sounds like one of those mobile phone calls made for everybody else’s benefit, you know the sort of thing:

“Hi! Sam Wollaston here! Just to say I’ve got a life, I know many things and I can flog a dead horse in a one track review”

Wollaston's review smacks of resentment. His resentment born of the belief that History should be elitist. That History shouldn’t be made accessible for all. That History should be kept in ivory towers for the children of the privileged only.

Only read Wollaston’s vacuous review after you’ve read this or, better still, after you’ve seen Channel 4’s worthwhile programme yourself. Don’t let Wollaston’s resentment, I mean review, serve its pompous purpose and put you off.

Watch 1066: The Battle for Middle Earth, buy it on DVD and show your children. There’s a game which will reinforce what they’ve learnt via this link too (c/o Channel 4). They’ll likely take all this to be entertainment while they’re being surreptitiously educated – can’t be bad!

They’ll understand 1066 and all that far better than the National Curriculum demands. They’ll be introduced to some primary sources (Norse Sagas, Anglo-Saxon Poetry, Chronicles, maps) not just the Bayeux Tapestry. They’ll be able to identify with invaders and the invaded. They’ll have an overview of pivotal months in English history and how the events of 1066 still shape this country. They’ll know something about military history and the history of invasions – always relevant.

(Battle scenes included make this unsuitable for younger children)

1066 The Battle Game...

No problem jdubhub - thanks for the information you've added - it should be useful for other interested parties. Can you access the game found at www.channel4.com/1066? XHellCatX wrote about a game featuring the first and fourth crusade (I think) have you seen that? JOIN XOMBA HERE FREE Xomba is an international online community and anyone can join. Thanks, AAT2

I checked out the Channel 4 shop and the DVD is only for Region 2 (PAL) DVD players right now. Currently, I am working on getting a second DVD Rom player for my computer, which I can change internally from Region 1 to Region 2 (changes the manufacturer allows only three times total over the life of the player for some reason). I bookmarked the page until I get set up. The DVD is going to be released on Monday. This is the link that took me to the Channel 4 store: http://www.play.com/channel4/ I will be happy to give you feedback on the critique. CLICK HERE TO JOIN XOMBA TODAY!

1066 The Battle for Middle Earth

It's by Channel 4 (UK commercial channel - the best one) - you might be able to watch it at www.channel4.com. (There's a game to plat there too). After last night's second of two parts (1 hour 30 minutes each) they announced the DVD could be bought at www.channel4.com/shop. If you can watch Euro DVDs I'd recommend this no problem. You'll probably have come across the etymology it includes - eg Berserker from Viking language - but (basing this on your comment), this was made for you jhubdub! Can't be bad. If you do manage to get hold of it I'd appreciate your feedback on my critique of the Wollastan review. Was it on the button or way off the mark? I'll see if BBC America will have this

Otherwise, I will look online to find a Region 1 DVD. I am such a fan of Western history and not the sort that old Mr. Wollaston would approve. Part of that love of history is my interest in etymology and being able to timeline the major changes in the English language with turning points in European history, such as the Norman Conquest.
