10 ways to motivate your child to read

As with most activities in life, reading is a great educational support, and will open your child to a new world, and different concepts and ways of thinking; thus, motivating your child will help them develop the skills and talents all parents dream of. Reading may not be the easiest activity to motivate as in order for your efforts to be successful, your little one will have to read constantly, and advance to appropriate age levels with different and various topics which will open their mind. Because of the technology we have nowadays such as computer and video games which are so readily available, it is often hard to get them away from the computer, television or video game in order to spend some quiet time reading and cuddling up to their favorite book. By instilling a love of reading to them at a young age, you will find that they will read more often when they grow up, and open their world to a lifetime of adventure; thus, they can explore the world in the comfort of a book.

The best time to motivate your child is at a young age as often good habits develop when one is still young. The younger your child is the better the time to motivate them to read. Perhaps, an interest in reading is one of the best gifts you will be able to give them which will benefit them throughout their life, and prepare them for a successful and bright life filled with knowledge, and luxuries.

1, you should start reading to your child at a young age with picture books. Colorful picture books help young children expand their vocabulary, and stimulate some creativity, and interest in them. Not only are they fun activities, they are also education and memorial for everyone. Three are many different books available for children filled with cute cartoon characters. You can always ask your librarian on a suggestion for a good book. I'm sure that you will find that there are many various subjects you can choose from which will help bring out the talent and skills covered within them.

2, Read to your children daily. A great time for reading is right before bed. Cuddle them up with a good bed-time story in the comfort in their own bed. You will find that they will grow a strong interest in books normally. Or perhaps, a good quality spending time is to read a small book with each other. As long as you read constantly with them, your little one will definitely progress, and if they had a fun time, it is likely that they will keep on with the habit of reading.

3, Act! Children love to act, and acting comes hand in hand with reading .Act while you read in order to instill a more visual image in their mind, and promote reading. Perform dramas with them, and you'll expand their areas of interest even further. Remember, to read with emotion, and act out the scenes as if they were real, and you were actually the actor. Note that the tone of your voice is very important.

4, Get your child a library card. At a young age, get them their own library card, and bring them to the library often (perhaps, weekly) to check out a couple of books for the week. Giving them their own library card will encourage them to borrow books, and will boost up their confidence and independence as well.

5, Have hefty discussion around good topics which they perhaps read in a book. If you read a book on a subject they may perhaps find an interest in, bring it up during a conversation with them, and see their opinion on the matter while voicing your own. Not only will this open their world and ways of thinking, it will also help stir up some interest on the various topics encouraging them to read more often.

6, Put reading into your daily life. For example, ask them to cook, and read the recipe or ask them to read the television schedule if they're looking for a good show to watch. Show them that reading is extremely significant in our life, and how it is involved in our daily life, and the importance of reading regularly. The more they read the more it will encourage them to read in the future and at the time.

7, Why not expand literature into song writing, poetry, and even finger plays? Puppet plays are good too. There are many different ways of expressing literature. For example, you can write a book, compose a song, and even perform finger plays; either way, open up the many different possibilities, and expose them to different sorts of literature in order to stir their interest in literature. Keep in mind that not everyone loves fiction stories or adventure stories, perhaps a romance story or a thriller will better capture their interest.

8, Have many books available in the house readily. Buy different books for them in different days, and perhaps even consider subscribing to magazines which they are interested in. Remember, if there are no books available anywhere in the house, they may never consider picking up a book for fun; however, if they have nothing to do, and there seems to be a book that catches their interest sitting on the table, they just may pick it up, and read it.

9, Ask them to write a book of their own. If they tell you a weird dream they have which seems to fascinate them, why not ask them to write it down into a book which they can keep, and cherish forever. Or, you can ask them to keep a diary or a journal. Keeping a diary or a journal is also a way of expressing yourself on paper. There are many different benefits involved including giving yourself therapy and perhaps looking back at your attitude and behavior on that day, and reflect on a better way they could have expressed their emotions and feelings. Don't hesitate to buy them a diary which they will be able to write all of their thoughts down. You can add some features like a lock which will help them insure of their own privacy or a creative cover which they could draw on themselves. There are many different ways of going about this idea!

10, The best way to encourage your child is to perhaps be a good role model and reading yourself. While you may want your child to develop, grow, and learn, you can also advance yourself by learning regularly through books or perhaps visiting the Caribbean which you haven't been able to due to time issues. By reading often, you will also encourage your little one to do the same.

Reading is supposed to be fun, and by making it fun, you will encourage them to read even more often. The key word of motivation is to make the activity fun; thus, they will continue it even after you stop making them. These are just a couple of ideas, think up some of your own which may suit your child even more.

Good ideas!

You posted some good ideas on how to get children into the mode of wanting to read for pleasure. As a stay-at-home dad with a toddler son, the most important lesson I've learned from the many books I've read to understand my son's needs and from my own observations is that the TeeVee needs to have less importance in the home for reading to have any chance of "taking" with the child. It is fine to pop in a video every now and then, but there needs to be that parent-child interaction that reading requires without any distractions. _______________________________________________________ "Treason doth never prosper, what's the reason?
