11 Tips for Looking Younger

Unless you're a 20 year old sneaking in to a bar with your college friends, everyone wants to look a bit younger.  As it turns out, research suggests that what you do and how you take care of yourself has a major effect on how you age...possibily even more than your genes.  So, take matters in to your own aging hands and get younger!

  1. Take vitamins.  Particularly 800 mg of alpha-lipoic acid and 2,000 mg of acetyl-l-carnitine.  These will boost the energy output of the mitochondria in your cells.  Mitochondria decay has been linked to aging and, for example, Alzheimer's
  2. Keep your precollege wait.  Ut oh.  Next to not smoking this is probably the most effective, and the most difficult for many.   As you probably know, carrying excess fat raises your risks for heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers.  Physically, when people are fit, lean and muscular, they tend to look younger.
  3. Get a pet!  Yey, difficult number two is followed by easy number three.  Unless, of course, you're allergic.  Pets are known to reduce stress and help you live a longer, happier life.  It's not just a concept, it's been studied.  Pet ownership wards off depression and high blood pressure (surprising considering the number of times our pets are naughty!).
  4. Walk and hike.  Those who walk briskly for at least 30 minutes a day have better attery walls. With age, arteries stiffen, so keep them flexible.
  5. Plant and smell the roses.  Surround yourself with plants or gardern if you enjoy it.  In one study, a plant filled room had a better effect on workers who were given a stressful task than the room that was plantless.
  6. Eat fish.  Fish is tasty and good for you.  Choose fatty fish, such as salmon, sardines and trout.  They contain the good omega-3 fatty acids which studies show helps prevent sudden death from heart attachs.
  7. Sing.  Oh yeah! Singing boosts your immune system.
  8. Opt for Tea.  Tea may fight prostate and breast cancer as well as heart disease. Green tea is best although black tea has benefits too.
  9. Keep a thin waist.  Fat on the waist isn't good.  Belly fat increases certain risks such as the risk for a heart attach or stroke.  Women should be less than 35 inches and men less than 40.
  10. Eat Indian food.  Okay, seriously though, turmeric, the spice found in yellow curry can help to heal with its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
  11. Protect your skin from free radicals by taking a fern extract.  The south american fern extract, Polypodium leucotomos may  help keep skin youthful by protecting it from free radicals and reducing inflammation.  There's no proof yet, but it can't hurt.
