2009 Hoboken St. Patrick's Day Parade Info

The Hoboken St. Patrick's Day Parade is one of the most anticipated in all the New York area, and this year's event will take place on Saturday, March 7th, 2009. Here is some key information you'll want to know if you're interested in attending the parade.

The 2009 Hoboken St. Patrick's Day Parade steps off at 1 p.m. from 14th and Washington Streets at the north end of town, and travels south on Washington. The reviewing stand is in front of Hoboken City Hall at 1st and Washington Streets.

The parade will last approximately one hour.

You can find more details at the official Web site of the 2009 Hoboken St. Patrick's Day Parade at: http://hobokensaintpatricksparade.org/ .

Naturally, the length of Washington Street will be closed during the parade and beforehand (at 12:30 p.m.) The organizers have said that Washington Street will be closed from 12th to 15th Streets around 11 a.m. so that bands and participants may assemble before the parade. Bus service on Washington Street will be rerouted to other streets.

There is no shortage of bars in Hoboken, and they will start filling up at 8 a.m. There are a number of Irish bars near the end of the parade at the south end of town, which are usually in particular demand. Some of these Irish bars:
The Shannon Lounge - 106 First St.
O'Donoghue's - 205 First St.
Mulligan's - 159 First St.
Duffy's Irish Pub - 239 Bloomfield St.
Onieal's - 343 Park Ave.

NOTE: Hoboken Police will be enforcing the City's zero-tolerance policy for carrying open beverage containers, so be smart and don't walk around town with open bottles, cans, or glasses. DWI checkpoints wil also be in effect, so don't take any chances: take mass transit to and from the 2009 Hoboken St. Patrick's Day Parade.

St. Pat's Day in the Middle East

"What I learned from talking to our Muslim counterparts in the Kuwaiti military is that there is the public face to the Muslim world but there is a lot more that goes on in their homes than the world knows, sort of a relaxing of perceptions." That's what I've heard... there's a lot of supposedly forbidden activity going on, but it's carried out in homes or secret clubs, and people are smart enough to keep it on the down-low.

Muslim countries and alcohol

When I was on WestPac back in 1995, we spent half the six-month deployment in the Middle East, including Jordan, U.A.E., Bahrain, and Kuwait. Bahrain was wet, so we could grab a drink on base. We had a beer tent and drank Foster's in Jebel Ali, U.A.E.. Jordan was wet and we drank long neck Amstel Light to the point I couldn't stand the taste anymore. Kuwait was the only dry country on our deployment. (After Gulf War I, the military kept most of the vehicles on Kuwait's border with Qatar so they would just have to fly the crews back in event of another war, which conveniently took place in 2003. Anyway, there was no alcohol allowed on the base because Kuwait was dry and the base, named Camp Doha, was nicknamed by the military there the Camp Doha Alcohol Rehabilitation Center.) What I learned from talking to our Muslim counterparts in the Kuwaiti military is that there is the public face to the Muslim world but there is a lot more that goes on in their homes than the world knows, sort of a relaxing of perceptions. Mulligan's of Teheran

I'm guessing that there aren't too many Mulligan's bars in countries that strictly observe Muslim prohibitions on alcohol. And maybe in some dry counties in the U.S. The bars in Hoboken do open at 8 am or so on the day of the parade, so I guess it's possible for a worker to finish his shift Friday afternoon, drink all night and into the early morning, and then continue drinking into Saturday morning.

Is there?

any city on the face of this earth that does not have a Mulligan's? I never thought of that as a parade - I just thought it was the construction guys walking home after hitting the bars. Visit my homepage here
