mythman, that reminds me of Calderón de la Barca

who wrote: "La vida es sueño, y los sueños, sueños son." --Life is a dream, and (even) dreams are dreams. I read that in college, centuries ago, and it stuck with me.

@jdubhub--veghead's Callin` Me Out ;-) ... Buddhism So-Does Not!

Buddha: some (I too, sometimes) say it means 'Enlightened One'; I prefer 'Awakened One.' Buddhism 'gives' Enlightenment or 'Awakenedness' just like the NBA 'gives' successful shots ... i.e. not any kind of 'source' of it, though it's what they're all about! ---Join Us Professional Friends who GET MONEY for Echoing the Universe: 'Bella?' as long as I get 10% of your income for the rest of your life

Not a bad deal, really, since life is temporary. Of course you can use it. ;)

@ Veg - Thats a "saying"

Thats a great quote Veg - "you don't have to be enlightened to know life is temporary" - you wont mind me using it somewhere?:-) Join XOMBA, Write, Make Money! My profile Blog

you don't have to be enlightened to know life is temporary

With all due respect, jdubhub, all humans realize their lives will end someday, when they "check out" (die). And I remain agnostic when it comes to the New Age or any other belief system that claims to confer enlightenment (and that includes Buddhism, although I am fascinated with it and with Yoga). Frankly, I'm also bothered by the idea that gurus like Louise Hay believe that the Holocaust was karmic payback for past life issues (suggesting that it was a good thing that millions of people were killed in concentration camps). That's as bad as saying that children who are raped and killed are just paying their karmic debts.

Fear can be used for good or evil

There are many belief systems that take that basic human emotion and use it to become more powerful by manipulating those feeling those feelings (as in the case of the "spooky book" to which you alluded). The most enlightened beings on this planet realize that this existence on this planet at this time is temporary and we shall "check out" when it is our time (one of five checkpoints written into our charts as Sylvia Browne has written). The key is to live each day as if it were our last and appreciate what we have right now. The closer we get to 12/21/12, the more people will begin emoting fear and the more doomsday cult-type groups will go public. I do not fear 2012 any more than I fear opening my eyes in the morning after a good night's sleep. When it is my time, it is my time and it is only my time because I chose it. We all choose our end time. We should not be participating in any belief system that says otherwise IMO. JOIN US IN TOASTING YOUR FUTURE SUCCESS!

people love to imagine Armageddon/end-of-world scenarios

Just like they enjoy watching scary movies or reading spooky books (like the Bible). It's part of being human. Since we all know that we as individuals will die at some point, we can't not imagine that the world will come to an end someday too. In other words, we're programmed by evolution to obsess about the end game. E.g., one of my all-time favorite movies is "On the Beach" (an oldie but goodie about the slowly fatal results of thermonuclear war, adapted from the novel)

12/21/12 is the beginning of a new age and nothing else

Well, I shouldn't say nothing else because that precise date will be used to strike fear into anyone and everyone who hasn't yet learned how to trust his or her intuition about significant events on the evolutionary timeline. There are too many belief systems in the world today that control their adherents with FEAR and those are the ones that stand the gain the most from people worldwide being scared of what "may" happen when that day arrives on the calendar. As for me, I embrace that day's arrival because I am looking forward to the next level of this planet's and mankind's evolution. If it means that I need to relocate myself and my family to stay safe from all the people crazy with fear, I will consider it, but I am not going to stop living my life right now because some external system says "Boo!".
