22 April 2009, Earth Day and It's Story

First Earth Day? 1970.

How did it come to be?

1970, in the United States brought with it the Kent State shootings, the advent of fiber optics, "Bridge Over Troubled Water," Apollo 13, the Beatles' last album, the death of Jimi Hendrix, and the meltdown of fuel rods in the Savannah River nuclear plant near Aiken, South Carolina -- an incident not acknowledged for 18 years. It was the idea of Wisconsin U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson. He has said, “it was a gamble, but, it worked.”

Tomorrow, April 22, is Earth Day. I would like to challenge each one of us, here, on Xomba, to do something extra, than what we normally do, for Mother Earth. Where would we be without her?

Here in Oregon recycling is a way of life. I just wish Oregon would make recycling a state law. That way, for those who don't follow the Oregon agenda would have to move out-of-our-state. Pop and beer cans and bottled water containers all have a mandatory deposit. Oregon was the first state to implement mandatory deposits for these containers, way-back in 1973 (water bottles were added Jan 1, 2009). We were the first state to ban pop-top containers. Portland is America's greenest city. And, little Tualatin, where I live have aimed our community towards "green" with lots of green-space, walkways, and protected watershed areas and parks. I don't think there's a community in Oregon who doesn't aim for such goals. It's the Oregon agenda. These practices should be America's agenda – it's coming.

Tomorrow, well, it will be a pleasure to celebrate Earth in Oregon.

I picked up trash along 1/2 mile of Sagert St. in Tualatin, OR

Well, in my 1/2 mile of trash I collected $3.75 worth of beverage cans (Oregon has a 5-cent deposit), and the most interesting thing I found was a brand new low-sodium light bulb. You know what their good for? They're good for growing marijuana. Low-sodium is used for tricking the plants into believing it's fall, causing the plants to bud faster. When I got home I called a friend of mine, that's not dead, and told her to stop by and pick it up. She's a licensed medical marijuana grower. So, I was able to help others by finding the low-sodium bulb, and, add $3.75 to my can collection. Celebrating the Earth in Oregon has been a dazzling day! Learn! Discover! Breathe! _______________________ It does matter what you believe, but, what you believe does not matter if you do not act upon your beliefs. you can not vote on the truth --Pope John Paul II, 1995

Xombie Earth Day Challenges

Wonderful informative article and love the challenge! What I did for Earth Day is create another Earth Day Challenge. LOL. I created a Xombie Group on "One Billion Bulbs" and challenge all Xombies to be a part of the Energy Trek Initiative and record the bulbs they change to CFL. Here is my Xombyte with more info. http://www.xomba.com/one_billion_bulbs_%E2%80%93_environmental_challenge_xombies_earth_day_and_future Visit the group’s page http://onebillionbulbs.com/Group/Xombies ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Earn for Your Writing on Xomba Earn for Your Writing on Bukisa Check Out My Writing on Bukisa
