3 Rescuers Killed and 6 Injured in Crandall Canyon Mine Rescue Attempt
posted August 17, 2007 - 5:19am3 rescue workers killed and 6 others hospitalized in two area Utah hospitals, when the Crandall Canyon Mine rescue tunnel collapsed during a seismic bump. These "mountain bumps" are caused by the buildup of pressure within the mine.
This pressure caused a coal pillar to more or less explode under the compression of the pillar shooting shards of coal into the group of rescuers who sustained traumatic head injuries.
Yesterday, Bob Murray, the owner of the mine had warned the rescuers that the mountain is alive and and active and that they must proceed with extreme caution.
This cave in at the Crandall Canyon Mine in Utah has dictated a halt in rescue efforts.
The fate of the 6 miner trapped 1500 miles below grownd is unknown, although microphones lowered through a small bore hole started picking up sounds from deep within the mine yesterday. They are not able to determine if the sounds are being made by the trapped miners.
The local community is devastated by the loss of these brave men. The Governor has suggested that rescue efforts be abandoned as too dangerous. Although the rescue effort has been temporarily halted, there are no plans at this time to abandon the rescue efforts.
