3 Ways to be a Successful Boss

Not only in game business, in every kind of business I've seen poor managers/bosses. Let me tell you what I think about how to be a successful boss.

Be Aware of Your Limits

Being the boss doesn't mean you can use your workers to do things for your personal needs. For example, you can't use a coder to buy hotdogs for your lunch, you should do it or you should hire someone with this job description.

I've worked for some bosses in different jobs and they were all the same. They made me pay their bills, shop for the office kitchen, buy lunch, lie to their wives on telephone. What was my job description? Mostly, webmaster, heh.

Manage Your Anger

Anger is pointless unless you mean something logical. I mean, shouting for everything and losing it won't tell your workers anything. They will just lose a little confidence in you as you will be a harsh ruler.

Learn to manage your anger, keep calm and try to speak with anyone and on anything makes you angry. Try to understand your workers, they may have their own reasonable excuses to act or be that way.

Have Experience in All Aspects

This doesn't go for all kind of jobs. I mean if you run some kind of a factory, it's almost impossible to have experience on all the jobs in that factory. But our job is games so let's get to it. Especially if you run a small group of 2-6, it's pretty possible to have experience in your workers jobs. Knowing a little coding, a little drawing, a little modelling etc. will give your project a boost as you will understand your workers and they will understand you. You will know what is hard to do, what is possible, what takes how much time.
