5 Outrageous Urban Myths About Celebrities

Rumors about celebrities have spread some of the most famous urban legends of our lifetimes. In the third installment of my urban myth series, I examine some of the most notorious of these legends.

Jaime Lee Curtis and Lady Gaga are Hermaphrodites A story originated in 1994 that Jaime Lee Curtis was born with male and female organs. Her parents decided upon a surgery that would remove her male organs and make her legally a female. Curtis has refused to discuss this subject and her physicians have remained silent over the years. Although this urban legend seems highly unlikely, as long as everyone involved stays silent, we may never know the truth.  Recently Lady Gaga has been accused of having organs of both sexes. This rumor has been fueled by a concert photo that shows a possible male organ protruding from under her miniskirt. A quote was released on the internet that says that she admitted to having both male and female organs. Her manager denies the quote and says it is completely false. What is the real truth? We may have to wait and see.

Clint Eastwood is the son of comic Stan Laurel – It’s hard to believe that this rumor would have received attention, but this one hung around for quite awhile. It seems that a slight facial resemblance between the two actors got this one started. It was further fueled by the fact that Stan Laurel’s wife gave birth to a son in the same month and year that Clint Eastwood was born. The child died nine days later and was cremated. This led to the notion of a conspiracy that the baby was secretly given away for someone else to raise. The truth is that there is no mystery surrounding Clint Eastwood’s birth. He was born in San Francisco to Clint Eastwood Sr. and Margaret Runner.

Richard Gere and The Gerbil – The story says that one night Richard Gere went to the emergency room to have a gerbil removed from his rectum after a sexual escapade gone awry. This story spread like wildfire and everyone took it at face value. After the rumor first surfaced, National Enquirer reporter Mike Walker spent months trying in vain to verify it. "I've never worked harder on a story in my life," he told the Palm Beach Post in 1995. He was unable to find anyone that was a witness to the event. Walker came away convinced he was chasing an urban legend.

Marisa Tomei won the Academy Award because Jack Palance read the wrong name – Marisa Tomei won the Oscar for best supporting actress at the 1993 Academy Awards. This was such a shock to most people that rumors started to surface that it was a mistake. Presenter Jack Palance was accused of reading off the wrong name. The academy was also accused of covering up the mistake. Different versions of the urban legend say that either he became confused and could not read the card, or he read her name off the teleprompter by mistake.  The latter could not be possible since the teleprompter only says (read envelope) and (announce winner).  The academy has vehemently denied any mistake over the years. The funny thing is that film critic Rex Reed has said on television that the academy was guilty of a massive cover-up. No proof has ever been found.

Marilyn Monroe had six toes on each foot - This legend was brought to light by photographer Joseph Jasgur who shot photos of her in 1946. These photos remained unpublished until he used them for a book some 40 years later. He claims that upon examining the photos, he noticed an extra toe on her left foot. When the photo was finally published, it did show a foot with six toes. However, pictures taken by other photographers clearly show that she has five toes on each foot.  Obviously Jasgur’s photos were doctored.
