5 Outrageous Urban Myths About Halloween
posted October 9, 2009 - 7:32pmThis is the second article in my series of urban myths. Here are 5 Halloween urban legends that have gained notoriety through the years.
Chainsaw –wielding madman goes to the wrong house. These stories gained more publicity after 16-year-old foreign exchange student Yoshihiro Hattori was shot and killed
after he knocked on the wrong door in search of a costume party. The homeowner mistook him for an intruder and shot him. The myth will sometimes have the character in different costumes, but most of them are bogus tales.
The haunted house so scary that no one has ever made it all the way through. Although this tale has popped up in many different cities, one of the most notorious ones was in Detroit. The haunted house was supposed to be an abandoned 5-story building in downtown Detroit. There were tales of live spider and snakes in the house. Secret doors and booby traps were so prevalent that it was impossible to make it through completely. No exact location of such houses were ever given.
Children are randomly poisoned by people tainting candy. There are many tales of poison in candy and razor blades in apples. Very few of these have turned out to be true. These stories became more frequent after the true case in Deer Park, Texas on Oct 31, 1974. Ronald Clark O’Brien gave his son Timothy Mark O’Brien a pixie stix laced with cyanide. The boy died later that evening. The father’s motive was to collect the life insurance policy taken out on the boy.
Satanists adopt black cats on Halloween to sacrifice them. This myth gained momentum when a black cat was found duct taped to a cross at the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center on Nov 1, 2004. The culprit, a teenage boy, told authorities he thought “it would be funny”. This urban legend was fueled even more when the humane society in Boise, Idaho in 2006 banned the adoption of black cats during the final week of October. Experts have said that most acts of cruelty toward black cats have originated from twisted individuals and not Satanists.
The car that runs over a child. A group of drunk teenagers coming home from a Halloween Party, think they ran over a dog in the road, but are too drunk to check it out when it happens. The next morning one of them goes out to the car and sees something hanging from the bottom of the car frame. When he bends down to pull the cloth attached to the axel he sees the mutilated dead body of a young child. This urban legend has been around for years but has no basis on actual events.
