With the information provided to the Texas Attorney General by MySpace, seven Texas sex offenders were arrested for being on MySpace.

In Houston, officials arrested Patrick Joseph Blevins, 49; Reginald Lee Collins, 27; Ronald Daven Metoyer, 41; and Robert Shepard Walter, 23. Walter was also charged last month with failing to register as a sex offender.

MySpace or MyPerv?

There are two additional problems with MySpace, in addition to sex offenders registering there. The first is lack of parental oversight in what their teenage sons and daughters are doing online. This leads to the second: pubescent boys and girls posting personal information and often suggestive photos on their MySpace pages, which lures the sex offenders to MySpace.

The parents can blame MySpace all they want--and some of the blame does belong with MySpace--but the responsibility for the conduct of their children belongs to the parents. I'd like to see that come out more when articles are written about the worrisome trends of sex offenders on certain websites, because what will happen eventually is that the irresponsible parents will get together and demand government intervention on the Internet, which spells doom for net freedom.
