The band is said to be considering writing some new songs that will be released along with a greatest-hits box set, according to the fan site Stingus.net.

The stable of aging rock music bands reuniting for tours or albums is already crowded, but there might be one big heavy hitter coming down the road: The Police.

Rumors are rife that the trio, which burst onto the scene 30 years ago with the hit tune "Roxanne," will reunite for concert dates this year in the U.K. and the U.S.--their first live shows since they disbanded in 1986.

Plans for the Police tour are in the works, according to Billboard.com, but details are being kept under wraps until all the arrangements are made final.

Last month the band's record label, A&M Records, said, "It is our intention to mark the anniversary by doing something special with the band's catalog of songs. Needless to say, everyone is hopeful the band will support our plans and while early discussions have taken place, nothing has been decided."

Several weeks after Billboard reported this story, Sting is on record as mentioning the band's anniversary, saying, "We started 30 years ago so it would be nice to do something to celebrate. We don't quite know what, but we're talking about it."

In addition to the possible Police tour, there has been talk of more Police merch being issued, including DVD releases and another multiple-disc CD collection. This will probably complement the box set of studio recordings and rarities that was issued more than a decade ago.

Sting, the lead singer for The Police, has had a successful solo career in rock music since the breakup, issuing a number of albums, and last year he branched out with a CD of medieval lute tunes, "Songs from the Labryrinth," issued on the presitgious classical music label Deutsche Grammophon.

Now that's a good idea,

Now that's a good idea, Idlewild. I just hope it doesn't put everybody's bladders on the same schedule. http://www.xomba.com/xombyte/thewonderer

If they're playing festivals

they should get sponsorship with that pill you take for "when you always gotta go" -- a great tie-in for big outdoor festivals where the nearest port-a-potty is 2 miles and 5,000 people away!

I guess they're finishing up

I guess they're finishing up negotions with their sponsors - metamusal and geritol. http://www.xomba.com/xombyte/thewonderer

I Didn't say it Was!

But here is how their ANNOUNCEMENTS are like McDonald's ADVERTISING: 'you've experienced their stuff before, and it was good; because of the announcements, you know that they have more stuff to experience.' Jude SpeaksI Attract You Write- Yayy!

I did read the comment,

but with or without the hyphen I'm not sure how the Police reunion is like McDonald's. But maybe that's just me. Has the Hamburgler been retired? Was the idea of a burgler deemed too negative a role model for kids to see on TV?

Pardon Me for Leaving Out the "-", IdleWild

If you had actually rehd the comment's-content or -subject, you would probably have seen that I said the band announcements were like 'McDonald's-advertising' or 'McDonald's[-]commercials.' It was late when I rehd your comment first, so my mind was then placated with a mention of Ronald McDonald and Hamburgaler (symbols of McDonald's-advertisMENTS and comercial-FOOTAGE). They haven't been going

--not for 20 years--so this will be the first time since then that they're playing together, assuming it really happens. That Sting fan site said they were playing at the Grammys and I'd mentioned it here, but the site was asked to remove that mention, so I did too. I've only heard a bit of Sting's lute music. Interesting, but I think his voice is more suited to rock & pop.

Wow, the Police are still

Wow, the Police are still goin huh? I have heard the most recent music Sting has relesed--the medievel lute songs--and was surprised to hear that type of music from him. The police are probably still really good live... www.bloggercues.blogspot.com

Ronald McDonald meets Sting?

Hmmm, I'm not sure how a Police reunion announcement is like McDonald's, but I hope there's no connection between the two. I'd hate to see Ronald McD on stage with the band, or Sting plugging their products, etc. Though seeing Sting dress up as the Hamburglar would be a hoot.

Like McDonald's-Advertising

The Police is an AwEsOmE band, absolutely, and Guru Sting ONLY IMPROVES with age; but any band's announcements--I find--are better to think of as McDonald's commercials: you've experienced their stuff before, and it was good; because of the announcements, you know that they have more stuff to experience. And if the time-and-place they mention isn't a 'time' you're free or a 'place' you can get to, you know they'll be in a 'time' and 'place' near your free-space soon. - Call me MythMan, MythMan J
