I heard Rachel say on a recent show that to easily clean a certain kind of vegetable, I believe it was leeks (or any other, for that matter) that she put them right in the kitchen sink to rinse. That made me shudder. I would hope she put them in a big pan, bowl or pot to do this in the sink. A sink, especially around the drain area I think, is literally crawling with bacteria and I would not want my food directly in it, even if it had been recently scoured and/or disinfected.
Some students for a school project here recently compared sinks, sponges, dishcloth, etc. with a toilet bowl and found the sink was more contaminated than the toilet water, rim, etc.
I never put any food I am going to eat, cut or clean etc. directly in/on the sink surface, or even on the counter top.
I never use the cloth or sponge I clean the sink and counter with for any other purpose, either.
I use a clean plate, paper plate or towel to put the food on, when making a sandwich for instance. or use a clean non-porous ceramic cutting board.
