A Better Explanation of My "Broke-Ass" Diet
A Better Explanation of My "Broke-Ass" Diet
If you read my previous post, you know that I am now a part-time vegetarian. Well, I wanted to expound on my "Broke-Ass Diet" for anyone who wants to try it and see what happens. Obviously I'll keep you updated, as I have only been on it for a week and have also been partaking in the holiday candy that comes my way.
So, if anyone wants to try it, please leave your feedback and your results here. Starting on Monday, November 12, 2007, I will stick to the regimen and post my results weekly. As of now, I weigh 118 lbs, give or take. I'll weigh myself on Monday morning to be sure.
The "Broke-Ass Diet"
Breakfast - 1 Bowl of Cereal, your choice as long as it has whole grains in it - General Mills usually has whole grains in their cereal
Use either Soy Milk or Non-Fat Milk. I use soy (SILK) cause I am lactose intolerant.
Snacks - if you must have one, can consist of tea w/ honey, fruit, or vegtables.
Lunch - 1 Bowl of salad, your choice. I just buy a 1-2 lb bag so I won't have to keep going to the store. My 1lb bag was $1.99 and it's going to last through next week. Pretty good deal there! Salad dressing. I try to spice up my lunch. It doesn't really matter what kind you use, but try to opt for the fat free variety. I usually drink a naked juice cause they were free and I have enough for at least a month. However, since we're all broke here, I say get a large juice from the store that is packed with vegetables and/or fruit and nutrients. Usually V8 has some that include both and are low in sodium. Salt usually makes you thirstier and I believe it makes you bloated when taken in excess. I think they usually cost around $4-$5 for a large one.
Snack - again, I'm usually busy so I don't snack, but if you do need one try fruit, celery, or something really small. Sometimes, this is where you can fit that holiday cookie in.
Dinner - Be discretional with dinner. Often times I'll eat a chicken sandwhich cause it costs $1 at McDonalds and I'm constantly on the go (gotta keep working so I'm not so broke anymore). I usually keep my dinner small so when I go to bed I won't still feel it.
On top of this, I follow these rules:
1) Get at least 6.5-8 hours of sleep, no less.
2) Excercise 2-3x week
3) Drink plenty of water
4) Don't eat 2 hours prior to bed time
Now, if you're like me, you probably go out on the weekends and that's why you're so broke during the work week. That's fine, but try to go to places that have no cover, have drink specials, and are close by home so you don't have to drive.
You shouldn't spend more than $10/week; which is way better than some diets that say "For only $10/day." I mean, that's $100/week on food. No thanks! I'll use the extra $300 I save on stocks...or for the weekends.

Regarding the drinking part, here is a tip I learned in the Navy
I spent ten years in the Navy and practically have a PhD in drinking. Even though we always had money in our pockets, sometimes we would have too much month at the end of our money. So, if we wanted to go drinking at a regular bar or club, we always made it a point to kill a few beers out of a case (depending on how many there were in our group). By having a head-start on our drinking by all going in on a case or a 12 or a sixer, we didn't need to drink as many $4.00 beers to get a good buzz.
That Reminds Me
Thank you for that. That actually reminds me that my friends and I found a mexican beer that has a turtle on it. I can't remember its name, but we call it a "turtle" when we refer to it. Anyway, they come in a case of 30 for $14. We've found those to be a nice money saving way to get drunk. They aren't too bad either. They have a imitation corona flavor to them, but better than that just sounded. I've had three before right before I went out and had a nice buzz going.
Also, we once went to a restaurant's anniversary where they were having open bar for several hours. As long as you wait, you can also pound quite a few drinks. There's a good suggestion.
Again, thanks for the comments!
That reminds me of something else, too...
When I got out of the Navy back in 1996, I lived at the Y downtown in San Diego. One thing led to another and I found myself with a serious cashflow problem. There was a store in the downtown San Diego area that sold products removed from the shelves of big chain grocery stores because they were almost at or just past their code date. I'm talking about cereal, pasta, canned goods, candy, etc, and not meat and dairy, although they sold that there (in code), too.
If push comes to shove, I'd rather pay a dollar for a big box of cereal that costs four dollars at Ralph's and spend that other three dollars for more food.
As a side note to the food situation, I will never, never, never, never, never again eat Ramen noodles. That store sold 12 of the bricks for a dollar and I must have eaten those every meal for several weeks. I cannot even stand the smell of them, much less the though of eating them. *blech*
Oh, I saw that you have the cheap Mickey Dee's burger for dinner. There was a BK almost across the street from the Y and they used to run the $1 Whopper special. I made it a point to deviate from the standard Whopper by ordering extra onion because they almost always had burgers sitting under the heat lamps from their lunch rush when I came in around 5pm. At least I could get something other than Ramen noodles to eat on occasion.
