A Brand is an Image: Practicing Picture Perfect Service
Before a client can ever set his eyes on the services that you are willing to provide, a client will set his eyes on you yourself. For a person in your position, this can cause a feeling of uneasiness. However, when you realize that a great opportunity exists for you to present an image of yourself to your client which will distinguish you and your services from those of your competitors, you will rest easy knowing that you possess an element of control over this new business relationship. You can present an image of yourself that is sharply focused, recognizable, and that will leave a lasting impression.
When you first meet with a client, his brain is filled with a wide array of observations, questions, and even expectations. More than anything, he is trying to size up your character. You need to let him know that he can place his confidence in your ability to deliver on the promises you make. Of course, this can only truly happen if you practice this ability.
Clients love a service provider who is sharply focused. This is the first thing they will notice about you. If you are focused, the client will not walk away with an unclear image of what you are able to do for him. If you make a point of providing sharp service, you will stand apart from a blurry background. For the same reason, if you're restlessly moving around in every direction, the image the client will walk away with is one that lacks a subject that is focused on.
You are the subject of your client's interest. What is it about you that will make him want to choose your services over those of others?
For this reason, you must be recognizable. What difference does another face make to a client if there is no personality that goes with it? Too often, we rely on our services to attract our clients, but what they find most appealing initially is a face that they can identify as personable and trustworthy. This means that you must be daring enough to let your personality show in your work where appropriate. Personal touches can really make a difference, and they can help you to be recognizable.
More than anything else, what you want to leave your client with is a lasting impression of your commitment to quality service. This will allow you to take the all-important step forward of discussing the services the client is in need of. A positive image is a good thing to have, but if it fades away overnight, it is worthless. So, give attention to creating a powerful image that will have a staying-power in the client's mind.
If you always present an image of yourself that is focused, recognizable, and that will leave a lasting impression, it will be a cinch that your client will not lose sight of the big picture.
