4:00 A.M.
I lie wide-eyed in my bed.
The first rays of morning light peak overhead
A broad horizon; hazy, cool.
Early birds awaken—literally and metaphorically,
But one such bird has never even slept.
A single night owl surpasses a threshold,
A busy day awaits his ever watchful eyes.
He will not falter when sleep calls him close,
Her tempting lure will go unheeded.

I am the night owl who needs not sleep.
I am the night owl who beckons forth a new day.
