A day every year is preserved for a special kind of custom in Hinduism called Shradham, Tarpanam, Bali, or Pitru Paksh.

In Kerala the ritual known as Vavu Bali performed in the month of Malayalam calendar Karkidakam. Hindus believe that Vavubali is the way to salvation for the souls of dead ancestors. The ritual should be performed in the no moon day.

During the day lakhs of Hindus assembled on the riverbanks of temples and religious places. They believe that the soul of dead ancestors attains nirvana or moksha by performing Vavu Bali on the banks of river.

Hindus use a type of long grass, Darbha, for the performance of Vavu Bali. A ring known as pavithram made of darbha grass, a full leaf of plaintain, some sesame, cooked rice and water are the necessary items required for the performance.

People of any age, women and children, who lost dear ones, can perform Vavu Bali. Some Hindus believe that the dead ancestors pay visit to their home during the Vavu day. Therefore members of family prepares delicious vegetable feast to the departed souls.
