A Grudge I Bear Against My Fellow Xombies

A Grudge I Bear Against My Fellow Xombies

points

I have noticed that quite a number of Xombies have exceedingly long sigs after their comments. These have the annoying habit of making me and other readers have to scroll more to get down the page... and long-distance scrolling - like long-distance relationships - does not work well for me.

I understand that you also want to promote your posts and referral links, but surely there must be a more considerate way of doing this? A short graphic like:

`
or a text link like:

`
is more than sufficient and does not stretch the page to exceedingly long dimensions, like

a

long

sig

has

the

tendency

to

do. So please, let's up the standards here at Xomba. Be considerate to the needs of your fellow readers and keep those sigs short. There is nothing more irritating than a one-liner that is followed by a half-screen sig. Besides, we want to read your posts, not your sigs!

Good point

We'd plan on addressing next week.

Not so much comments as sigs in Xombytes and blurbs.

We'll address it next week in a blog.

No, reason to panic.

You'll still be allowed to have a signature.

Longer

I knew the ladies were lying to me. Longer is not better! Its the content that counts.

It's About the Legs

Yes... it's only the one's who don't have legs that say that! Just like the ones who don't have good content make up for it with longer posts...

Ok... I'm generalizing and being unfair, but please indulge me.

Ladies?! Legs?! Now you've got my attention...

Sorry, seeing the words 'ladies' and 'legs' in the same discussion just woke me up!

But back to the matter of sigs and such, I'm generally annoyed with anything that strikes me as excessive self-promotion, whether it's promoting one's own Xomba content or outside money-making opps or political/social stuff.

What I consider 'excessive' though can depend on how long the content is, how distracting it is, etc.

What I don't like...

is when people leave comments with self-promotion. Hey it's my byte! You can promote yourself but please, not on my work!

Brilliant point. I was just

Brilliant point. I was just contemplating posting a similar byte... +1

thank you

i've been contemplating adding a sig to my posts but i absolutely detest having to scroll forever past the longer sigs (plus i use that ancient technology known as dial-up which mean the bigger the sig the longer it takes the page to load).

Over the top

The only content a Xombyte/blurb should have in it should be about the title. Anything else is inappropriate EXCEPT a few lines about the author and a link or two to their profile/website.

Comments should be the same way.

Like I said earlier we'll delve into this subject next week.

Yeah... we know exactly how to catch your attention =D

It's good to see that you all also feel so strongly about this. Thanks for the support and hopefully things will start to change around here.

Yeah, Tara! That's the Way Good Religion Works

It's the way St. Paul suggested church-leaders should deal with presented conflicts (atheists, heretics, etc.): not arguing, just never changing the good example you set!

For instance, those 468-wide banners--though they show more of the title--also stretch the column if you reply within a long list of responses; so ... se below ...

Point well taken

Got ride of that long box; now I'm using the Feedburner banner thingy. :)

Re: Point well taken

If you mean the widget/blidget thing, you can edit it to make it more horizontal than vertical.

kjhack's picture

That's true

But I went the Feedburner, instead. Just looked purtier to me. :)

taranitely's picture

Vertical

mythman:

Are you saying that they're bad? I've never seen what you're talking about before so I can't say I'm exactly sure about what you're saying. If you have a link I'd be glad to take a look.

The 468 px banners work fine for general use though so I don't see why you are complaining about them. Normally they won't take up more space (vertically) than your 234 px one.

What I (and others) are really complaining about is when people have very long banners, especially after posting one liners.

Referral Buttons

To the people who use them...do they increase your income by much?

I Think I'm Training to Be a Bodhisattva, Adrienne

(Well, actually a Buddha; but Buddhas are Bodhisattvas while they're alive.)

I sort of 'let the words flow.' If they flow in poetry-, theology- or philosophy-patterns, then poetry, theology or philosophy (respectively) will fill the page.

If that paints me as a poet, a theolet or a philosophet, so be it.

Whatever helps you, Adrienne.

You're right, Tara ... as Always (lol)

The 468s aren't really a problem; they're just the example I was using. If the response-column gets enough replies to be narrower than 468px, the right side pushes the far-right column over so that readers have to scroll right to see the new posts. The 234px button doesn't do that as soon.

But I'm not 'arguing' that either way is wrong. I'm just affirming that 'my' way is right. That's how religion should work.

What you are talking about is this widget, I s'pose and some long promos.+1...

taranitely's picture

You're right too, mythman

I figured out what you mean! And yes it is a problem =D It does mess with the appearance of the site, but at least you don't have to scroll forever to see the new posts. I'm sure there must be some programming fix for it.

So yes, you are right =D

*groan* I can't believe you just did that!

mythman's picture

Did What? Let the Angelic Smile-of-Tara Cool My Rage?

As far as programing fixes, I can only think of the one TETRIS subliminally taught GAME BOY-nerds: use code that works with respect to the space available!

The Closest I Could Get to Email

Something I first thought to add to a 'Pledge of Allegiance'-response, but then decided it was too off-topic:

That lovely face: Maybe you could put up a picture of 'you out in public with your husband (who must be the King of the World, with such a wise woman to help support him).'

To make it on-topic here, I could say that the chance to see cuteness like yours makes it almost-worth the extra scrolling ... or maybe my over-flattering warning-light is broken!
