A guide to sequencing, part 1- Nucleotide
posted February 27, 2007 - 2:52pmHave you had ever wondered if some part of a DNA nucleotide sequence was related, but you do not know how to find out? Or have you ever just wanted to know more about how much certain organisms are related to each other? Or have you ever had another DNA problem? If you answered yes to one of these questions, but do not want to go though all the work of finding out for yourself how to do it, then I am here to help. I will not be covering how to acquire a DNA sequence here, but I will if someone is interested. If you have a sequence, and want to compared it to other organism, then go to this great website. Then go to the blast option at the top. Now, since this is about nucleotides, go to the blastn option. now get add the nucleotide sequence that you have and then choose the blast option. There are many options that you can choose, but they really should be used for only advanced user. Still you are free to experiment with the options. The next screen will give you a number, but just hit format. This could take a while, but you will finally arrive at a screen with a bunch of lines. the lines are color coded, and the closer the color is to the red, the better the match. Now you are free to look up any organism that has any similar to the one that you put in. There is a lot of information that can be seen, if anyone wants I will go into more detail about that later. So now you know the basics of how to compare sequences. Feel free to comment, or ask any questions.
