A Letter Assignment - Creative Writing

Dear Prof,

This is a letter from me to you to let you know a little bit about my background and who I am. I’m going to tell you first about my home life, about my school and work life, my hobbies, and my goals. You might find this interesting, but more likely you’ll be bored.

My full name is Aimee Jo Barrickman. I’m 19 and I live in Upper Deerfield with my dad, step-mom, 17 year-old brother, and my dog named Beau. My mom is also re-married and lives in Vineland not far from the school. I like living with my dad because I have my own space here. Me and my dad only started to get along this year. We are a lot alike whether I like it or not, and although I won’t admit it to anyone I look up to him.. when I‘m not annoyed by him. I still don’t like that my parents are divorced. I had caused “all hell to break loose” as my mom would say the first couple of years afterwards. I was thirteen when they decided to separate and my mom took me and my brother back to her home town, Alabama. My brother decided to live with my dad after a short amount a time. I remember being glad he was leaving, because I didn’t like thinking of my dad living without either of us.

I didn’t like the south, the people, the Piggly Wiggly’s, the accents, and I didn’t like the huge change. I was thirteen at home alone when I had my first panic attack thinking I was having an actual heart attack. After a year my mom decided to move back to New Jersey for me and my brother. She had no one here besides us. We drove with my fluffy, cream colored kitten in her white pick-up truck with our things in the back. The truck that I drive now. That was a long time ago. She got a job bar tending and I lived with her. She was a good mom and we had fun together. I had moved back and forth between my mom’s and dad’s a couple times, and I dropped out of school when I was sixteen to get my GED. I started taking classes the summer I was seventeen at CCC and started driving that year. I moved in with my dad when I turned eighteen and here I am still. I like the space I get at my dad’s house, but I do miss living with my mom.

I go to school and work part time at a pizza place near my home. I recently switched from an Un-declared major to a major in Radiology, and I am already thinking about switching. I don’t like the idea of the Radiology program. It’s a two year program to train you for a job. I’d rather work my way up to a masters with a more open degree in
either Math, English, or Biology. I know I can do anything, I just forget it half of the time. I feel the best when I am in school. I feel like I can do better then I think I can. I feel like I can find out who I am if I keep learning about the world around me. I care little about working, however. I don’t like the idea of putting a dollar sign on my time. I don’t really like serving food. I don’t like being a pawn. I could be doing pretty much anything else with my time. The world works a certain way though, and I have to work too.

When I’m not at school or working there are plenty of things I like to do. I like to exercise. I run and bike almost every day. I love the feeling I get from it. I feel energized, awake, and I have cleared my head. The endorphins that are released from exercise of that kind has been called “natural morphine”. I can concentrate on that good feeling and get a complete sense of wellness. There is no greater drug. This one has side effects that include: better health and a better body. I also like to read. I’ve been a big Steven King fan, but now that I’m getting older I like different books, and since I‘ve finished the Dark Tower series I can begin to explore new authors. I like Hemmingway and Dostoevsky and I’m excited to start reading The Idiot. I also like art, even though I’m not too good. I’m best with pastels but sometimes I play around with paints for fun. Recently I’ve started to teach myself piano. The Lullaby and Jingle Bells are my latest hits.

I’m an average girl I guess. I like to learn and better myself, and I like to have fun. I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up, and I’m okay with that. I’m excited to find things that I like to do and to become good at them. I’ve never had a hard life but I’ve had plenty of things to overcome mentally and I’m proud of myself for it. I hope you enjoyed reading about me.

Your Student,
Aimee Jo Barrickman
