A Life Worth Living part 6
Connor, looking at Dewer’s badge: “Dewer, I need to talk to you in private for a minute.”
Dewer: “Fuckin’ shit! Alright!”
Dewer and Connor took a few steps toward the parking garage leaving Jennie to contemplate her next move.
Where the hell is he going? What is he thinking? If he was going back to New York he would have already left. If he was just hurt he would have stayed at the crash site and dealt with the locals – he knows the drill. Why is he risking everything? Where is he?
Connor: “I hate to tell you this but your guys and you are going to have to let this go. Doug and Jennie are under witness protection. We’ll handle it from here. We’ll put an end to it.”
Dewer was at first a little taken aback. He, of course, had heard of witness protection and knew that Florida was a place where the FBI liked to relocate people in the program but, this was the first time he had ever encountered it in his daily business. Dewer was about to start in on the whole ‘What hell you talkin’ ‘bout, this is our case’ stuff when he looked at Connor. Connor looked at Dewer as if he was ready to fight – verbally or physically – it didn’t seem to matter to him. Dewer though was in no mood to fight. If the FBI wanted this mess – God bless them.
Dewer: “It’s all yours.”
Dewer turned around and yelled to anybody that could hear him “Pack it in guys, the Feds are taking over.”
With that, everyone in a police looking uniform and some in street clothes turned and walk away. Where? Maybe to their cars, maybe to lunch, who knows but they just left. That left Connor and Jennie with a lot of confused citizens.
Connor walked toward Jennie seemily unperturbed by the mass of questioning faces and said point blank: “Where’s Doug?”
Jennie: “I have no idea.”
