A Madman With His Finger On The Nuclear Button

A Madman With His Finger On The Nuclear Button

The linked article states:

"If Pakistan's upcoming election goes as expected, Asif Ali Zardari, widower of assassinated leader Benazir Bhutto, will succeed Pervez Musharraf as the country's next president, giving Zardari at least partial sway over the Muslim country's nuclear arsenal. Concerns spiked last week with the disclosure of medical records indicating that as recently as last year, doctors hired by Zardari had diagnosed him with mental problems including dementia, depression and posttraumatic stress disorder. While Zardari's spokespeople say he has been cured, multiple U.S. officials, among them Rep. Pete Hoekstra, the ranking Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, told NEWSWEEK that word of Zardari's mental-health history took them by surprise. "Typically," said Hoekstra, "[The U.S.] wouldn't want that kind of person" involved in a nuclear chain of command."

With threats like this (and there are many more known and unknown examples out there) it is very important that we (the US voters) take our voting responsibility (yes, RESPONSIBILITY) very seriously this November. More importantly (since about half of us will be on the "losing" side), we must all strive for cooperation once the election is over. We have much bigger fish to fry than arguing who is right or wrong.

@lmorovan: Glad to be of service

This is an issue that affects me, which may be why McCain's deal is flagged in my memory. I spent my whole childhood being told that I had dual citizenship because of my birth location and the Navy recruiters even had a tough time getting me enlisted over it. When I joined, it was to learn nuclear engineering/propulsion, which required that I be a confirmed U.S. citizen. Since I didn't have anything on file Stateside at the time, the recruiters at the MEPS had to contact the county clerks where my mother and father were born and get certified copies of those to prove my citizenship. My father didn't enter the U.S. State Department birth record into the county clerk until after I'd been in a few years, which prompted me to confirm my dual citizenship through the German Consulate. As it turns out, all of that paperwork was for naught. I never had dual citizenship. If McCain had been born just six months later, this debate would be rendered moot. DO YOU HAVE THE WRITE STUFF?

Thanks JD, appreciate your answer

I know, we have developed great skills to complicate things from a legal point of view :) But then, how else could lawyers make a living? So, we have McCain, born of American parents but on a territory that was not part of the U.S.A. On the other hand, we have Obama, allegedly born in Hawaii barely 2 years after the islands became part of the Union, from an American mother and an alien father. Interesting. I was born in Wurzburg, West Germany

Both of my parents were American citizens by birth and my father was an army officer stationed there, but I am recognized by the U.S. and German governments as a U.S. citizen. While I do have a birth certificate from the German hospital, I am recognized as a "Child Born Abroad of U.S. Parents" by the U.S. State Department. I cannot get a German passport because I have no legal standing under German law, as confirmed by a letter I received by the German Consulate in Washington, DC. The reason that McCain's birth is in question is because the laws governing the actual geography of one's birth were not decided until after he was born. What it comes down to is the actual language governing his parentage, which is American citizen on both sides, and the actual, physical location of his birth. The latter is what technically causes him not to be a citizen, at least according to the legal scholars, one of which I cited in that article. DO YOU HAVE THE WRITE STUFF?

JD, tell me, please

A child born to an American mother and an American father is an American or a citizen of the country he is born? Does he have to apply for American citizenship? I am serious. To read my posts and articles click here: http://www.xomba.com/xombyte/lmorovan

@lmorovan--McCain's citizenship is not that black-and-white

Why Senator John McCain Cannot Be President: Eleven Months and a Hundred Yards Short of Citizenship Nothing may come of this and nothing will probably come of the issue with Obama, but it will cause the courts to clarify for future elections who is and who isn't a citizen for purposes of running for certain political offices. Imorovan

Both candidates for president have already submitted documentation to prove that they were born in the U.S., and it has been authenticated by the State Department. Seriously, you need to stop believing everything you read just because it supports your biases.
