A Soldiers Refrain - Poem by James Wood
posted March 26, 2008 - 8:24pmA Soldiers Refrain
(This poem is intense, heart wrenching, and may conjure up intense visual images.)
I saw on the battle plains
And upon my disdain
Of men lying dead
Which we could not refrain.
Eyes on mangled bodies
Dying in pain,
It cut our
souls
It did not refrain.
We left the battle fields
Upon our women and little ones domain
We saw the marks of the enemy,
He had not refrained.
Sights we had suffered
could not compare to the pain
women in their beds
not on battle fields slain.
We saw his work
the enemy did not refrain
from mutilating our little ones,
who were not on the plains.
Suffering and pain
Cut out our souls
Who could bear it
We were no longer whole.
We vowed deep in the darkness
Never to depart
For the enemy did start
A rot in our hearts.
Never refrain
Never again such pain
Like when we looked on Two Towers
Of women and children slain.
So, when we captured an enemy one
We saw the death of our sons
“I do care what the cost
I'll get the info out of him
No matter what is lost.”
Never to see again in our bedrooms
And not on battlefield plains
Of woman and children tortured
So, from torture we did not refrain.
So, upon me you might pour out your disdain
And say I should have refrained
From pouring on our enemy
Such torture and pain.
But, I saw our sons
Dead not on the plains
For the love of America's children
I did not refrain.
Pouring on the enemy
Equal suffering and disdain
So, I laughed at him
As he cried out in pain.
With images so gruesome
Cut out our souls
The enemy still tortures us
With images un-whole.
So try as you might
To pour on me disdain
For the love of our precious ones
I will not refrain.

Note: the author has never been in the military. This poem came from the depths of his soul ... somewhere. The author has never seen any of the visual images portrayed in this poem nor does this author condone the use of torture. This poem reflects why some of our best and brightest make and have made the value choice to protect us at any cost. Whether right or wrong, I am not able to judge, for I have never been anywhere near what they go through. I support our troops whole heartedly. They make and have made huge sacrifices for us all and I appreciate them. Thank You.
