About new Laptop Technologies
posted August 29, 2006 - 5:47amWe have to realize that laptop technology is advancing at a high rate. When you buy a new laptop, the next day it`s already out of date. In this article, I will try to explain some the main "geek terms " you should consider when buying a new laptop.
As a standard buyer, the main thing you should understand is the outcome, the result of the technology you`re going to buy. What you have to consider is that new laptop technologies make them faster, more powerful, easier, smaller. Nowadays, laptops are outselling desktop computers.
So, I will try to guide you through some of the most important new laptop technologies, to help you pick the one that best suits your needs.
64 bit laptops
Most of today`s laptops use the 32-bit systems. If you are a hardcore gamer, desktop publisher, presenter, graphics artist , you might want to consider the 64-bit laptop. The main difference is, that it`ll be able to support more memory.
On the other hand, if you are just a regular user, like I am, consider buying a 32-bit laptop. All of the major manufacturers like AMD, Intel... now produce 64-bit laptops. They come with hefty prices, so stick to the 32-bit ones if you are a regular user.
Sonoma chipset
The new Sonoma Platform, Intel's next-generation Centrino Chipset is already on the market.
For a regular user, it won`t make much difference, but it will produce some significant utillities such as longer battery life.
You`ll also be able to stay connected wherever you are thanks to the integrated tri-mode 802.11a/b/g.
Improved performance comes with support of up to 2 GB of DDR2 DRAM, PCI express, integrated graphics and Hi-Def audio. Again, if you are a regular user, it`s not necessary for you to have it.
PCI express
PCI(Peripheral Component Interconnect) Express is a standard for expansion cards. You might want to check out on it, because your laptop will perform faster as well as connect faster to the other ones.
Graphics card
They are a very popular theme around these days. It`s the everlasting fight between the 2 giants : nVIDIA and the ATI. Personaly, I`ve had many problems with ATI cards in the past, and I would really recommend not to use them. Not that they suck, It`s just my personal opinion and experience.
LumiLED display
Watch out for the LED (light emitting diode) display technology, because it is going to wipe out the LCD monitors. There are some laptops on the market with LED monitors, so you,if you like better, sharper, and brighter picture, you might want to check out on them.
Conclusion
There are tons of other new technologies out there, but you might want to pass on them right now if you are a regular user. They just don`t seem to provide much difference to a regular user. However, if you are a hardcore gamer, publisher of graphics designer, try to find dual core laptops with Sonoma chipset and a better graphics card, perferrably nVIDIA one.
