Acidity levels on West Coast rising faster than scientists had estimated
posted May 23, 2008 - 3:31amTwenty miles off the west coast, from Canada to Mexico, the ocean water's p-h is falling, thus, becoming more and more acidic. Scientists did not expect this to happen for fifty more years.
The problem with this occurring is that small shellfish, and other soft shell creature's shells, and coral start to dissolve, at a rate faster than the animal can reproduce a replacement.
These small ocean animals are the type salmon and other fish feed off of. They are at the base of the marine food chain.
Because of the signature of the acidic water it can be traced back to being caused by the results of burning fossil fuels.
