Adventures in Boyfriendland (AIB) #4 Dinner With My Brothers

As we all know I've been dating my boyfriend for about a year now. So this weekend we took both of my brothers out for a birthday dinner (their birthdays are within about a month of each other). But this is the thing, my brothers live two hours away.

Now my boyfriend has never been known for his patience, but this particular weekend he was a definite picture of it. Let's see how this went.

Saturday morning I had a class and I had previously asked him if he'd drive with me to where my brother was (oh yeah, I had originally forgotten about the other brother...oops) so that I could take him out to dinner/lunch after the class. Mind you, the drive was about two hours one way (though at the time I thought that it was only a little more than an hour away)and we were driving home the same night. Ok, so we get in the car at about two thirty in the afternoon and we're on our way when all of a sudden I think to call my other brother. He said he didn't get off until five so I asked my boyfriend if we could go back and we'll leave at four instead. He was nice and said ok and we went home.

Then we left at four and I just knew that we were going to be there around five or 5:15 at the latest. It was 4:45 when I realized that we have more than an hour to go. When we get in town at almost six, I give the first brother a call and he says, "aawww, man, I wanted to finish watching the game." So I said some not so polite things and he quickly changed his mind. But my boyfriend heard what was going on and quickly started to get angry (You know that boyfriend angry where they just make the face but you know they're pissed). I was thinking that I should just set him off real quick so he'd get over it but then I decided against it.

Anyway, we picked up the second brother first and then hunted down the first brother. When he finally got in the car (he's the tallest so he sat in the front of the little sports coupe), he immediately changed the radio station. Remember, I never set my boyfriend off so he's still stewing about earlier and now my brother is doing the no-no of car radio no-no's. But now I can't set him off.

So now we arrive at the restaurant. It was a little Italian bistro and the food was great. However, they had a little flat screen above the bar area and my brother took that opportunity to watch the game. Now because it was a college town, and most of the people were watching the game at sports bars and parties if not at the game, there was only two parties at the bar. Our's and a little family tucked away in a corner. The restaurant staff was nice and put us on the other side of the restaurant.

We tried to make small talk but you can only do so much when you hear all the moaning and groaning coming from the "peanut gallery" (my brother watching his team lose the game). Then the manager (who my brother apparently knew by the welcome he received) was trying to figure out how to turn the captions on the tv. My brother went to complaining in an extremely loud manner. This was making boyfriend mad....well it was just adding up.

Then brother number one yells out an expletive, immediately followed by "I'm quiet on the outside, but I'm screaming on the inside."....lol. I let him know he wasn't that quiet. I don't know why we weren't kicked out of the restaurant. I really wanted to be though, so that the embarrassment and boyfriend's impending anger would disappear. But they took it.

When the game ended it was time for the who knows more about me contest. (Oh yeah, brother number two is still there but he's pretty calm and didn't say much at all). So boyfriend and brother number one start discussing my likes and dislikes. My boyfriend is competitive so although he won the battle, you could see the anger when brother number one tossed the only Snicker's bar out of the Halloween can of candy we happened to find as we were leaving the store.

We dropped off my brothers and were on our way home. Now ladies, guys, I don't know how you do it, but when I'm on a long car trip and the gas light comes on I feel that is a good time to get gas. However, my boyfriend "knows" his car so we go through the whole gas argument whenever we drive somewhere. It's usually short lived.

Well this time I didn't even want to say anything so I just put my seat back and tried to rest rather than watch all the exits go by. I always think that when the time comes when there are no exits, that's when the car is going to breakdown from no gas. But then he asked, and kept asking why was I laying down rather than talking until I finally answered.

That is when he finally went off. I knew it was coming. It's all very funny when you think of it.
