Age Old Debate - God or Evolution

Age Old Debate - God or Evolution

It's probably the oldest debate between science and religion; is man a product of God or evolution? The church teaches that man was created by God, in His image, while science states that we evolved from ape-like creatures through evolution and natural selection.

A new skeleton, believed to be 3.3 million years old, has been discovered in Africa. It is of a 3 year old female and has been named “Selam.” The skeleton is complete and will allow scientists to study every bone to determine a more accurate path of evolution. So far it has been determined that it did stand up right like a human, however, the upper body appears more ape-like. They are looking closely at whether or not this creature had extensive climbing features to determine if it falls within the evolutionary concept.

Regardless of what conclusions scientists reveal, the Church will continue to teach that God created man. We will still believe the story of Adam and Eve as well as other bible stories. The religious will find some other explanation for what was found by exploring the skeleton.

Whether you believe in the process of evolution or you are religious and believe in the Church, try not to get too caught up in the debate. The truth is that humans do exist. Do we really need the technicalities to cause more arguments? You and I are here through some sort of miracle or process. Believe what you will, but allow others believe too.

This is just one woman’s opinion. Take care.

and that's just it

YOU didn't witness jesus turn water to wine or heal the sick or raise the dead or resurrect. someone wrote something 100 years after it may or may not have happened, you read it thousands of years later, and this to you is proof enough. believing in god is just as sturdy a plank to walk on as believing in the big bang. no one SAW god create the universe any more than anyone SAW the big bang happen. and anyone can write something down and claim it to be true. ever read the national enquirer? bat boy lives!

creation

Ah spellcheck shmellcheck, you made your point Lynn. As far as evolution goes, and the big bang,I still haven't seen something blown up that created something nor have I seen a monkey have human offspring,or an apple seed turn into an orange.I'll stick with the witnesses who saw Jesus Christ turn water into wine ,heal the sick, raise the dead, and ressurrect from the dead himself. I believe that Jesus loves every one of us unconditionally and wants our hearts now as time is almost up.

How can it be an age old debate?

I was just wondering how this could be an age old debate when the idea of evolution has only been around since the 19th century? I thought age old debates required more... age.

That last point wasn't a resounding nail in the coffin.

and you believe that too?

just wanted to say a few things on here: 1) one person made a comment about evolution as sounding preposterous. but trust me, it is no more preposterous than what the bible says about man's creation, or any other religion for that matter. god took adam's rib and made a woman out of it? he formed man out of dust? he created a perfect garden, yet stuck a tree in the middle of it that no one was allowed to eat? and don't get me started on angels having sex with humans and creating a race of giants. yes, that's what the bible says. oh and a talking serpent, can't forget the talking serpent. 2) as someone else on here said, religion and evolution are not mutually exclusive, they don't cancel each other out. if you want to believe in god, where's the harm in thinking that god set this world in motion and that evolution is just one more piece of the clockwork puzzle that he created to run on and do his work. in fact, the creation myth from the bible seems to parallel many modern scientific beliefs: the big bang being the light that the planets then sprang forth from, the rivers and oceans coming next to cool these planets, then life forms in the oceans, then life forms on land, then mankind. the only problem is that the bible actually offers two different creation myths, one in which man comes last (or rather, man then woman... and the cheese stands alone, hi ho the dairy o), and one in which god makes animals to please a bored man, then makes a woman to please a bored man. but if we go w/the first one (and the one that appears first in the bible) then it does follow along a scientific and evolutionary timeline. 3) if the big problem here is that evolution doesn't take into account how "god created this in one day and that in one day" just chalk it up to a misinterpretation or mistranslation of the bible and be done w/ it. you know they DO exist after all. even in english, a day doesn't have to mean a time span of 24 hours. us old folks like to say things like "back in my day..." and not mean 24 hours ago. 4) my own beliefs have changed immensely over my lifetime, and continue to change and evolve. i'm not even sure what i believe anymore.

Oh, happy, happy day!

I believe in the Kingdom of Grandoria...

...which sits on a bed of clouds in the 4th dimension, and whose Almighty Ruler (known only as "Ì"), creator of the entire 3rd dimension, often pays visits to planet Earth, waiting for the day when humans will evolve to the point of finally being able to see Him.

I believe in a Supreme Creator

I believe there was and is a creator, I believe in Jesus Christ as the only BEGOTTON son of God, not the only son of God. I believe God has other sons and is going to have more sons. I believe we humans are destined to a higher calling and that we are joint heirs with Christ at resurrection. He is my big brother. I believe God does not want any human to perish eternal and all can come to him if they choose. He gives humans free choice and that is even the choice to not believe he exists or believe they came from apes or some other evolution. But once again those life forms began from some place too. I believe in everyones right to choose to either believe in a creator and creation or in evolution. It is a God given right. I have had many miracles throughout my life that the doctors could not explain. On a couple of medical charts one was my daughters they wrote, GOK "God only knows". Why she survived and is living and well. I do not seek relgion in times of trouble only. I talk to God daily often many times a day. I KNOW he is. And nothing is going to convince me other wise. So as Lynn said this debate can go on and on and time will tell sooner or later the truth of it all.
