Potty Training All About Poo

"I Am Up To My Neck In Poo!"

It's been a rough day today, as far as going to the bathroom goes......
This morning I gave my two children a bath. I put my 9 month old in first, good thing too cause he pooped right after I set him in the tub. My 3-year-old daughter said, "eeeewww mommy, it stinks in here, I am not going in the tub!" "We'll have to clean it all up first," I replied. 20 minutes later we had bath time.

As the day went on my 3 year old pooped in her "big girl underwear" a total of 3 times!! One poo in the big girl undies is hard enough to deal with, today she was on a roll! I can understand her stomach possibly having been upset today, the thing is though, and we’ve been dealing with these poo accidents for months.

Our daughter is 3 years and 4 months old. She is the first child my husband and I have tried to potty train. We did many things to try and prepare to potty train her; online research, talking to friends and family, we bought potty training books and a video, we've used different types of rewards, and we've tried pull-ups disposable training pants. The first time we got our daughter to use the potty chair was at 22 months old. We were proud, excited, and impressed! We thought, maybe this potty training stuff isn’t going to be so hard after all........WE WERE TOTALLY WRONG! 18 months after our toddlers first pee in the potty chair and we are still potty training. We could never have imagined it would take this long.

Our daughter does go pee pee on the big toilet every time. It is the Poo that is giving us problems. We have tried special toilet training methods in regards to pooping such as; saying "goodbye poo" when we flush. My husband and I have learned that pooping on the toilet can be fairly traumatic for a young child. We've heard that the child feels like they are losing part of themselves. What we cannot understand is how long can it possibly take for these types of feelings to go away?

We are starting to feel like we are failing at potty training, and like we are doing something wrong, or is there something more we should be doing?

I know that my husband and I are great parents; it is just difficult to be stuck in this rut.

Poo rebellion

I have heard of these types of issues with kids who have younger siblings. Some say it is a cry for attention as they have been use to being the "only" child and received all the attention before baby. I have also hears that girls are harder to potty train than boys. I do not have girls, but I can say my boys were easy. I would even say they did it themselves will very little coaching from me. My brother did have a tougher time with his oldest daughter, after her sister was born, two years apart, she reverted back to wetting the bed and herself for about a month. Accepting that everyone is different doesn't erase the frustrations though. One day, you will remind your daughter what a "stinker" she was and will be able to laugh!
