Almonds- How can you use it in different forms
When I was a child, I always thought that people who ate nuts were nutty. It was a nutty thought because today, here I am advocating the inclusion of nuts in our daily diet. Nuts are certainly not junk food. And studies have shown that those who eat nuts live longer than those who do not.
A- For almonds- those oval ones, in easy to crack big shells.
B- For Brazil nuts
C- For cashew nuts and coconuts
H -for hazelnuts
P- for pistachio, peanuts, pecans, pine nuts and more
All of these nuts I rate almond as the king of nuts and so it top my list. Almond have a great crunch and when you get that sinking feeling on an empty stomach, just dive into a bag of almonds and munch a handful. In fact, they’re packed with calcium, vitamin E, magnesium and potassium and since it hardly contains any carbohydrates worth mentioning, almonds are very desirable for people who are on a carbohydrate restricted diet.
Because their delicate flavor, these nutrient nuggets can be eaten raw, on their own, used in salads or sprinkled over deserts, even ice creams; any which way you want-whole, shelled, ground, silvered, chopped, blanched, plain, roasted, salted, sugared, or smoked- all tasty ideas.
Here are some tips that how you can use almonds in different forms
You can simply grind blanched almonds in a food processor and make almond flour. Use it in soup, stew or sauce thickener.
Heard of almond milk? It is easy to make. All you have to do is blanch the almonds, a cupful will do. What do you mean by blanching? It means to immerse in boiling water for 2-3 minutes and then drain them in a colander as you do in pasta. Wondering why you have to do that? In this case, to slip off the dark skin- but remember to cool them before that. Then we add four cups water and let them rest for 12 hours; and then into the food processor they go. Whiz, strain and there we have a lip smacking drink.
The other popular form of almond is paste. You can sandwich biscuits with it or just spread it over a plain cake. This too can be made at home- grind the almonds in a food processor. Scoop them into a bowl and add sifted caster sugar, egg white and a bit of salt. Store, tightly wrapped, in the refrigerator, for emergencies.
In fact, the Indian system of medicine, Ayurveda, considers the almond a nutritive for the brain and nervous system, inducing high intellectual levels. So eat away.
