Alternative medicine explained

Alternative medicine is, in the most basic sense, the practice of using treating medical problems with methods that have not been vetted by the professional medical community. People have used alternative medicine to deal with a variety of ailments and to treat a variety of healt-related issues.

In itself, the idea of Alternative medicine is neither good nor bad: just because something hasn't been proven to be effective at a task doesn't mean that it doesn't work, only that it hasn't been proven. Of course, if something has been proven to be ineffective, that's a different story. For the most part, alternative medicine tends to eschew anything that has been disproven scientifically.

There are a variety of forms of alternative medicine. Alternative medicine encompasses areas such as herbal remedies, aromatherapy, acupuncture, acupressure, homeopathy and others. Each of these areas has different approaches to medicine, and each has its pros and cons.

Herbal remedies rely on the use of herbs to treat ailments and increase health. As such, herbal medicine is some of the oldest sort of medicine. Many traditional medications actually began as herbal remedies, and more and more are being tested every day. While some herbal remedies aren't particularly effective, many people have experienced success using certain herbal medicines.

Aromatherapy uses essential oils to treat health issues. The idea behind aromatherapy is that these oils offer concentrated medicine to the person who inhales their vapors. In some cases, an aromatherapy medicine may be used by massaging it into the skin, allowing it to be absorbed in that manner.

Acupuncture and acupressure rely on the idea that there are certain points on the body that relate directly to specific health issues. These alternative medical treatments have been used for thousands of years in Eastern countries such as China, and have many advocates in the West, as well.

Homeopathy is based on the principle that exposure to a small amount of the thing that causes a health problem can help the body build up an immunity to it. So, for example, if a person is allergic to spinach, the homeopathic remedy might be for the person to use a lotion that contains a small amount of spinach.

While these aren't the only alternative medicines available, they are the most common. As always, check with your health care provider before starting any alternative medical treatment.
