Am I or Am I not a writer?

Am I or Am I not a writer?

I have struggled with this question for quite a while. It has taken me the last year to even start writing something down on paper. I just didn’t have the nerve. When I mention to friends that this is my dream they look at me like I am very small or ignore what I have said entirely. I wondered why this was. Was I not saying this with enough conviction or did they think it was a childhood dream and that I was talking about it way too loud.

Ever since I could remember I have wanted to be a writer. The excuses I have used not to write have been many and varied. The previous year I have spent way too much time just reading get rich schemes. They especially captivated me and I had grandiose ideas. Fortunately for me I landed back on earth on my feet instead of my head. Instead I have decided to actually start a writing strategy on my own. No special formulas and no special tricks needed, just write each and every day.

Perhaps one day I can make a living from this. Not sure if that day is tomorrow, next month or next year. But I least I will have finally tried.

These are my writing resolutions:

Practice writing. I believe a writer can be made.

Stop looking at the get rich plans of writing. There seems to be a new one every minute.

Plan a writing strategy and develop some goals

Continue sharing my writing goals

Develop thick skin for the writing rejects. Do not take them personally.

View each life experience as a writer

I am now taking each day as it comes and happily actioning my plans. If I give myself the freedom to write without the million dollar paycheck pressure will I make a living doing this? Who knows – can anyone really answer that question.

Don't let anyone discourage

Don't let anyone discourage you and give some of the other writing sites a try, there are a ton of them!

Angel I write for Associated

Angel I write for Associated Content, Helium, Textbroker, Constant Content, Demand Studios, Today.com, and blogger, and a few other places. I am also a member of the Accentuate Writers Forum. They have paid writing leads listed there. I have two articles in for consideration with online magazines which are higher paying markets than Associated and the others.

The writer definition

Well, technically one who writes is a writer. If you want to call yourself a professional writer, you need to be paid. It took me 8 years to start making money from writing but I don't consider that what I'm doing now is much different to what I was doing 5 years ago (except that the quality is now higher). I agree with your plan to write a lot. If you write expecting to earn money, statistically speaking you'll be disappointed (most fiction writers don't make a living from writing). Write because you enjoy it and see where it goes. And good luck www.petemalicki.com 84% awesome.

Good luck with your writing. I've been writing for a almost a year. I absolutely love it! I don't make a full time living from my writing, but I do make something. I write articles for the money, and fiction because I love it! It is my dream to get a short story published this year. I managed to get two poems accepted into an anthology that's coming out next month, which I'm very happy about! Keep following your dreams. You will succeed! Angel

re: business speak

The comment was meant to be tongue in cheek.

business speak ?!!

"Speak" is a verb. The correct nouns to use are, e.g., "speech", "language", "terminology". I don't care how many writers are using "speak" as a noun these days, it's wrong, and if I ever used it that way, I apologize. English may be a malleable, dynamic language, but there are limits.

re: Just do it

Thanks for the advice. Yes I will have to stay away from the business speak. It does get ingrained.
