America the Beautiful Quarter & Silver Bullion Program - U.S. Mint - starts 2010 (and introducing the 2010 5-ounce Silver Quarter)

 The tails-side of the U.S. Washington Quarter (1932 - 1998)

And now the latest in a-long-line of Washington Quarters issued in over 50 designs since 1999.

 The Quarters:

With the end of the State Quarters Collection, which included  a quarter from all U.S. States, Territories, and D.C., 2010 will inaugurate an entirely new collection of Washington Quarters.  The front or “heads-side” will have the familiar portrait of our first President, George Washington.*

(* A restored version of the familiar 1932 John Flanagan portrait of George Washington will be featured on the obverse - heads side - of the quarters.)

All the historical sites and parks have been selected. The collection of 56-quarters feature designs depicting national parks and other national sites.  Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner selected the list of sites to be honored after consulting with the governor or other chief executive of each host jurisdiction and Secretary of the Interior Kenneth Salazar, in accordance with authorizing legislation and the site selection process.

Each year through 2021, the Mint will issue five new quarters with five new “National Site” designs.  They are being issued according to the year they first were recognized as a National Site. The sites are currently managed by the National Park Service, United States Forest Service, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The first five will be released about one every nine weeks, or, so.  The first five are:
1)  Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas (1832)
2)   Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming (1872)
3)   Yosemite National Park in California (1890)
4)   Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona (1893)
5)   Mt. Hood National Forest in Oregon (1893)

The coins will be issued for general circulation and minted at the Denver and Philadelphia Mints and bear the “P” and “D” mint marks respectively. Uncirculated and Proof coins will be made in copper-nickel and 90% Silver at the San Francisco Mint and bear the “S” mint mark.  These coins come in a number of collector sets at varied prices direct from the United States Mint.

There are no designs to see as yet.  Below - via the U.S. Mint - are some pictures of similar coins in gift sets:

The Bullion: Silver Bullion Quarters

“The United States Mint will also mint and issue unique silver bullion quarter-dollar coins that are exact duplicates of each of the America the Beautiful Quarters. The bullion coins will be made of .999 fine silver, have a diameter of three inches and weigh five ounces. The fineness and weight will be edge-incused on the bullion coins - meaning the edge of the coin will have fineness and weight of silver content stamped on it. The United States Mint will issue these coins under the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin™ Program. Each silver bullion coin will be available for sale during the year in which its corresponding circulating quarter-dollar coin is issued.”

Can you imagine tossing that coin on a counter?  Five ounces is a lot of weight.  And, a three-inch coin?   I can't weight!  :-)

You'll need those "5-ounce" Silver Quarters too-total 112 coins

I'm guessing the 3-inch 5-ounce quarters to cost around $100 each -- so, get ready for the BIG COLLECTION!  The regular quarters + the Big Silver = 112 coins!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks to everyone for the votes and comments.....

the 5-OUNCE US Silver Quarter for 2010 is a collector's coin

I imagine they'll sell for "silver per troy ounce x 5 plus a little extra charge.   The great thing is they're bigger than the quarter and will be an exact issue of each of the general circulating quarters in this series.  I imagine they will be beautiful, and costly, compared the just the regular quarter.
