America Presents! - A New Generation Of Nuclear Missile Weaponry

A Little Something
To Reach Iran

We have, at this Xomba "News & Issues" forum, some discussion in the past of the logic involved in our national policy of Nukes: who may have them, who may not. The case in point, herein, Iran.

The United States has a vast arsenal of missiles, and nuclear warheads, which are capable of reaching any point in the world. We also have a defense shield, to negate incoming missile attack. We have a wealth of nuclear power facilities producing inexpensive, clean power to our nation. However, we forcibly prevent other nations of the world from developing similar facilities. Nations such as Iran do not see themselves as inferior, relying on our complacency. Rather they feel they have as much right as we to develop energy and defense systems.
But, in the real world, Iran has stated an objective of "blowing Israel out of existence". Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has not backed down from his radical positions. What are we to do?

Here to illustrate, and further complicate, from AP:

March 2, 2007
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Bush administration selected a design Friday for a new generation of atomic warheads, taking a major step toward building the first new nuclear weapon since the end of the Cold War two decades ago.
The military and the Energy Department selected a design developed by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California over a competing design by the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, according to government sources who spoke on condition of anonymity in advance of a formal announcement.
The decision to move ahead with the warhead, which eventually would replace the existing arsenal of weapons, has been criticized as sending the wrong signal to the world at a time when the United States is assailing attempts at nuclear weapons development in North Korea and Iran and striving to contain it.
But military and Energy Department officials have argued that the new U.S. warhead will not add to the nuclear arsenal. They maintain the new design will make the weapons stockpile more secure and reliable without the need for actual underground testing.
The warhead has been the focus of an intense competition between Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore, the government's two premier nuclear weapons labs.

This is not "false bravado."

This is not "false bravado." Right now our military is limited by the powers in Washington, much like they were in Vietnam. (I believe I made this point on another xombyte as well.) If they were allowed to do what they do best (blow things up, kill people, break stuff, take the will to fight out of their opponents), we would have similar results to the first Gulf War...you know, that three day war in which we annihilated the Arab world's "greatest military." We are not called a "superpower" for no reason at all. That word describes our military and economic might in the world. Most nations (and despots in particular) envy us for it. If our politicians would stay out of the way of our military commanders, our wars would be much quicker and we would have far less casualties.

false bravado

"But I have confidence in our military that, if allowed to do what they're trained to do, it can be easily won." Mission accomplished? The President, also, has a problem with false bravado.

Oh, OK...I just wasn't sure

Oh, OK...I just wasn't sure if the nature of this post was to simply inform. Usually that doesn't happen here. And I agree that Iran cannot have a nuclear arsenal and a war with them may be inevitable. But I have confidence in our military that, if allowed to do what they're trained to do, it can be easily won. The trick is that we need to do something BEFORE they have nuclear capabilities.

This quote..!

This quote, from the Wonderer: "So if the status quo hasn't made us more secure, we should assume other countries respect power, even if they don't like it, and upgrade our arsenal." I absolutly tend to agree! BBJ

Global, thermo-nuclear war

Publius has made a inquiry as the the point of my most relevant, interesting, and informative XOMBYTE. I'm glad he asked; I shall answer. In this particular posting I wasn't favoring either side of the volatile issue, who should have nukes, who should decide.. In fact, I was presenting, in a concise fashion, both sides of the question, so that the reader may make the decision for himself. But beyond that, the broader point, as Barack Obama agrees, is, we actually can't allow Iran to have a nuclear arsenal, and we actually have to go to war, if necessary. And if that becomes necessary, owing to our lack of negotiating capacity, it may be a very costly endeavor.

Sorry Johnny, I'm not trying

Sorry Johnny, I'm not trying to be rude here, but what was the point of this article? Was it only to give us an update about our missile designs? If it is, that's cool...I just wasn't sure about the meaning of this xombyte.

If we got rid of all our

If we got rid of all our warheads now, I don't think it'll slow down Iran's nuclear weapons program one iota. If we keep the status quo, it hasn't and won't persuade them to change. Just as it hasn't deterred North Korea or anybody else. So if the status quo hasn't made us more secure, we should assume other countries respect power, even if they don't like it, and upgrade our arsenal. http://www.xomba.com/user/thewonderer
