American Airlines & Delta Airlines Drop Out Of Federal Safety Program
posted December 11, 2008 - 1:11pmTwo of the Nation's leading airlines, American and Delta, have dropped out of a federal safety program that was designed to catch pilot errors before they resulted in an airline crash.
The Aviation Safety Action Program, or A.S.A.P., allowed airline pilots to admit mistakes without fear
of being punished. The Aviation Safety Action Program was designed to encourage voluntary reporting of pilot errors before they resulted in an airline crash.
American airlines has been part of the A.S.A.P. program for 14 years before dropping out of the safety program.
The A.S.A.P. reportedly does not have anything to do with daily safety inspection and airplane safety maintenance of the airlines in the safety program. But the safety program does more than just try to catch pilot errors before they result in a crash. The A.S.A.P. also assists airlines in finding and identifying runway configurations that can be confusing to pilots, the factor cited in the 2006 crash of a Conair jet in Kentucky that killed 49 people..
