American Airlines Flight 896 - A Women Dies!

Carine Desir was on a flight home from Port-au-Prince with her cousin, Antonio Oliver, and brother, Joel Desir. Carine stated that she did not feel well and was very thirsty. After she had her meal and some water she then complained she was having trouble breathing.
A flight attendant refused her request twice when she asked for oxygen. Only after other passengers aboard the flight became agitated over the situation, the flight attendant then consulted with the cockpit. After they tried to administer oxygen from a portable tank and mask that apparently was empty. Two doctors and two nurses that were aboard flight 896 tried to administer oxygen also from another tank. That too was empty.
After all attempts to save Carine Despair, she died before they landed.
I read this story in disgust for a number of reasons.
First of all, why would you need to consult the cockpit in order to save someone’s life? It’s just something you do! Why is it that the flight attended didn’t give Carine oxygen when she first asked? That’s her job! Take care of the passengers and make sure they are comfortable. Then there is the bigger question. Why were the oxygen tanks empty!
Every time we get on a plane we put our lives in the hands of the Airline, pilots and flight attendants. This doesn’t sound like a company that takes that seriously. I will most CERTAINLY think about who I fly with next.
