American Idol Top Twelve Show Recap
posted March 13, 2007 - 9:37pmDiana Ross was the mentor for this show. Every song that was sung tonight, had been previously sung by Diana Ross, though not necessarily originally sang by Diana.
The good performances on the American Idol Top Twelve Show
Melinda Doolittle, singing home from the Wiz, gave Diana Ross goose bumps. I think she gave everyone goose bumps. What did the judges have to say? Paula is one big blubbering goose bump, Randy thinks she did good, and Simon got the giggles. He called her a young Gladys Knight. That is a good thing.
Gina Glocksen surprised me with her rendition of Love Child. She listened to Diana who told her to enunciate and pronounced every word. Randy, wasn’t overtaken, and called it pitchy (what the heck does that mean). Paula and Simon were unimpressed. I guess I am easy.
Lakisha Jones sings God Bless the Child, from Lady Sings the Blues, which Diana Ross remade. Oooooh. Girlfriend rocked it. Randy said sensational. Paula saw her heart. Simon said she has IT.
Jordin Sparks took the advice of Diana Ross and projected her voice, and told a story. She did it very well. Randy was impressed. Paula gushed. Simon called it gooey, but still very, very good, and final-worthy.
The OK Performances on the American Idol Top Twelve Show
Brandon Rogers, the first idol contestant up, sang, Don’t Hurry Love. He sang well, I guess. He is so cute, you kind of want him to win, but he really does belong on Broadway (which isn’t a bad thing). Unfortunately, he forgot the lyrics. Since I am writing this as he sings it, I am cringing to hear what Simon is going to say. Yeah, Simon was harsh and dismissive.
Phil Stacey did an OK job singing I’m Gonna Make You Love Me. However, I think he finally made me understand what pitchy means. Randy and Paula liked his vocals. Simon said OK but he shouted too much.
Blake Lewis did a good job of updating an old Motown Song (Set Me Free). He made it kind of dorky-cool. (I made that up) Paula and Randy liked it. Simon was not impressed.
Stepanie Edwards, singing Love Hangover, altered the song almost im-perceivably… she ran the big notes somewhat long to show the power in her voice. (Oh, sit down Paula!) I did not notice, but Randy said she forgot lyrics. Simon implied it could have been better.
Chris Richardson sang a song I was somewhat unfamiliar with called The Boss. The beginning was rough. He was the most animated of all the contestants and probably got the crowd the most excited. Of course, Randy said he overdid it. Paula thought he trumped all of the guys. Simon said it was horrible.
The bad Performances on the American Idol Top Twelve Show
Sanjaya Malakar is another cutie you want to win on general principle. Though is voice is pleasant, however, I find it weak. But then Michael Jackson’s voice can be weak at times too. The judges stammered and called it bad. Simon also called him brave.
Chris Sligh sang Endless Love in a new age, somewhat Renaissance sounding style. Diana Ross, warned him about not listening to the melody. I think he balled up her advice and threw it away. I did not like it at all. Randy thought it was weird, messy, murderous, and droning. Ouch!
Haley Scarnato sang Missing You, Diana Ross called her voice a recording voice, versus a live voice. To me that means that her voice needs to be doctored and does not work well on stage. Not good. She butchered the lyrics as well. I sit here cringing again. Paula complimented her looks. Simon cheered her up and complemented her presence.
