The American Super Bowl - Who Cares?

The American Super Bowl - Who Cares?

The internet is currently awash with Super Bowl fever. Well, assuming you're American, that is, which is still the second highest internet population in the world so a significant number. But how many people really don't care?

It is, after all, a purely local affair. This year's final is between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals. Who? Not quite in the same league as Manchester United or Real Madrid. Not even on the same planet as an Italy Brazil World Cup Final. I know, I know, Americans like to hype things. They even have a "World Series" in which nobody outside the US actually plays. So how popular is the Super Bowl?

The game itself kicks off at 6.20 pm EST and has hours of entertainment before and after. Americans enjoy an all-day party with BBQs (in February?) and plenty of drink. That's fine, the FA Cup in the UK generates the same kind of day-long hype. But what about the rest of the world? In Europe most people are already asleep - or already drunk - and the game finishes after 3 am GMT. In Asia, which has a large base of sports fans - actually they are just gambling fans and sport is the most fun to gamble on even when in many countries betting is illegal - it will be early morning. Having a party and getting smashed at 8 am is definitely on some people's wishlist but don't expect a national Superbowl frenzy.

So, given that much of the world is asleep or doesn't care how many people watch this all-American spectacle? One figure that keeps getting mentioned on the net is that some 1 billion people watch the Super Bowl. This seems miraculous and probably includes the ghosts of American fans. Viewing figures are as much about hype as the whole game so let's take a look at some facts.

According to msnbc.msn.com and quoting from WikiAnswers, "NFL.com says Super Bowl XLI will be televised in 232 countries and "available to an estimated worldwide audience of 750 million to 1 billion people."

But the NFL doesn't know how many people outside the United States actually watch the game, nor has the league ever "provided the media a figure of total worldwide viewership," said Brian McCarthy, an NFL spokesman.

"We do know U.S. viewership because Nielsen tells us," McCarthy added.

The closest anyone has come to gauging global Super Bowl ratings is a tracking system devised by the New York-based media research firm Initiative, which collects data from 54 of the major TV markets from around the world. According to Initiative's most recent measurement, Super Bowl XL posted an average audience of 98 million, with 151 million tuning in at some point."

So, the 1 billion figure comes from the NFL's potential audience, that is, adding up all the TV viewers in all the countries that have a licence to broadcast the game. Laughable as a genuine viewership.

There is, however, one event that did come close to 1 billion viewers: the World Cup Final between Italy and France with an astonishing 10% of humanity watching it at some point.

Indeed, even the European Champions League will often get more viewers than the Super Bowl, in spite of being shown in the very small hours of the morning in Asia. I've sat around drinking with Thai friends at 3 am watching Champions League games.

Although this didn't start off as an American football versus football debate it does put into perspective how popular the Superbowl is worldwide. There will be many who feel a plague on both houses and prefer to go shopping. That's probably the healthiest attitude. To Americans, enjoy the day, just don't expect everyone else to feel the same.

Now, let me go play with my feet.

More sports please

It is possible to like US football and soccer; you don't have to choose one over the other. Just like enjoying badminton and tennis, neither are exclusive. Except for diving. If you like diving, you can enjoy no other sport. That's the rule. Check out my blog: dogsandjeans.blogspot.com

same same but different

well, game over, though strangely this article is still getting votes but no comments. I gather it was an exciting Super Bowl finale, but I watched Liverpool v Chelsea, with 2 goals in the last minutes ending 2-0. Same same but different! Apparently Enough People Care!

$3 Million for a 30 second spot... Anyway, I don't think they spend a lot of time marketing outside of the States except for some exhibition games abroad which are usually pretty popular because of the novelty of it. The European League was kind of funny...mostly guys on their way down and out and then the obligatory 'host nation' players. I recall watching, I think it was, the Frankfurt Galaxy and I swear I saw the kicker eating a Bratwurst on the sidelines! Man Utd Move to London Stadium for Next Two Seasons!

jdubhub> I'm not sure if the NFL just want to sell merchandise but the English Premier League make a fortune from worldwide TV rights, much of it getting redistributed as prize money to EPL clubs. The clubs certainly make lots of money from merchandise too. One thing European football fans really don't understand is this franchise business. I hear sometimes an NFL team will just change city. What's all that about?! I can just see Man Utd deciding to go and play in London or Milan for a few seasons. Would be riots - in both cities!! Join Xomba Here

Don't tell that to Roger Goodell

Goodell is the NFL Commissioner, for those who don't know. The NFL is arguably the most successful of all American sports, which is why it is hyped as much as it is. I don't believe that the NFL has reached close to its saturation point in the US market, but the merchandising revenue potential for a worldwide market is huge and probably has well-placed people salivating. The NFL has played preseason games (The American Bowl) in London, Mexico City, and Tokyo. There is also one regular season game (I guess we could call it the Jet Lag Bowl) in London. Buffalo, which is just across the bridge from Toronto, played a "home" game there this past season. With the demise of of the World Football League and NFL Europe, look to see the NFL finding more ways to play regular NFL games in world cities to increase interest in the game. Goodell will try anything to increase revenues, including moving the Pro Bowl from Honolulu back stateside and playing it a week before the Super Bowl to shake things up. It isn't about increasing worldwide viewership as much as it is trying to find more customers for NFL-licensed merchandise. JOIN US IN TOASTING YOUR FUTURE SUCCESS!

I personally think american football is very exciting. I esp. liked your analogy to a chess board. And I like the way they start off with a lot of noise. But its just been a year of watching a few highlights - all b'cos of Xomba. I love most sports, mostly because of the competitive spirit involved . Hey, i have even watched golf games over days at one time :-) And if you like sports where something happens all the time and the scoreboard keeps ticking (unlike in football where it hardly moves half a dozen times)...try cricket - the 20-20 version of it as Rawnak says! Xomba Sponsored Football/Soccer Team

Now that is a brilliant idea, Nick. Imagine the kind of publicity you could get and the amount of money you could generate if your team reached the Super Bowl? Abmox would make a great mascot for the team too. The team would wear "Purple" T shirts with the Xomba Logo...:-))

Hey, lots of great posts,

Hey, lots of great posts, thanks! When they started showing American football in the UK it was pretty popular and well produced TV coverage. Yes, it is very tactical and very physical - I could even launch a mean ball! Like soccer in the US, there was, maybe still is, an attempt to kick-start an American football league in Europe. Never really took off. I think the way to introduce a new sport is to what the Japanese did with football (soccer). Import lots of famous talented players just past their best and show everyone how it's really played. Japan are perhaps now a top 10, certainly top 20 football nation by FIFA rankings. Actually the USA team is not completely useless these days but there are lot of Americans playing in Europe, which helps them but doesn't help the soccer league back in the USA. I don't really follow the Beckham family soap but doesn't sound like he's had a great time in the US, coming back to play for Milan and rumour has it might be back in England soon. Join Xomba Here

Football / Soccer / Rugby / Gridiron!!???

Wow..Now I am starting to get confused between all these terms..Think I need to educate myself more about them. LOL :-)) Yes, cricket is a slow game as compared to all these other games, that's why they came up with a shorter and quicker version called the twenty20 Cricket and has become quite a craze with the population in India specially after winning the world cup. I prefer that version of the game. Its got all the excitment, just enough overs for quick runs and the result of the game is faster...I don't understand why they still want to continue with the 5 day test matches?? Aren't they outdated now? Isn't it better to stop those and just have the ODI matches and the twenty20 matches instead....

ManU

Ah, thanks for clearing that up..I knew that Man City was owned by the ousted former PM of Thailand, Thaksin and it didn't go over very well when he wanted all the players and coaches to bow to him...lol..soon after that he sold the team to Dubai or someone from Dubai.
