An Open Letter to T.J. Rohleder (and Anyone Else who Mistakes ‘Money’ for ‘Worth’)
posted February 25, 2008 - 7:49pmI’ve been getting sales-letter-after-sales-letter telling me about how T.J. Rohleder will allow me to be ‘one of the only ten people for whom he will do several-thousand dollars’ worth of advertising to make me several-hundred-thousands of dollars if I send him a little less-than a hundred dollars every month.’
Just recently I got a sales-letter from T.J. Rohleder asking me, “Was There Something I Did Wrong?” If you didn’t see it in the message above (which each sales-letter reiterated over-and-over-and-over), I’ll tell you below:
It’s only worth something if someone else gets a good service in return for it. As it is, you might as well have asked me to send you a hundred dollars every time your dog takes a dump on my lawn! The only evidence of any ‘good’ that comes from T.J.‘s money is the paid-postage on the envelope his letters came in! ‘I’m sorry, T.J.; but if that’s the kind of work that earns you millions, I would be a billionaire by now!’
I’ve gotten tons of other ‘give us money to get yourself money’-attempts in the past; in my younger days, I even fell for some of them. But now I know ‘profit-money’ is just a side-effect of “wisdom.”
To me, that immediately brings up the subject of Jesus. Today, people at the gathering heard the old ‘sheep and goats’-prophecy (“I will turn to the sheep and say, ‘I was hungry, and you fed me; I was thirsty, and you gave ... Welcome into the Kingdom of Heaven.’ And I will turn to the goats and say, ‘I was hungry, and you did not give ... Get away from me!’ And they will say, ‘Jesus, when did we see you hungry ... and not give?’ And I will say, ‘As you did to the least of my followers, that you did unto me.’”)
Were someone to use that scripture as reason I should have joined T.J. Rohleder, I would counter with the second-half of the Great Commandment: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. If I were T.J. Rohleder, I would send Jason H. Hubbard one of the multi-thousand dollar checks and bill him the hundred dollars (which he would then have available to pay to T.J. Rohleder)!
