Angry Video Game Nerd

Angry Video Game Nerd

I'm not sure just how many people have shared in this extravaganza, but I'd like to bring to light one of my favorite internet past times: "Angry Video Game Nerd" (or simply AVGN, as his fans are fond of calling him). Apparently, the AVGN is the ninth most subscribed-to channel on YouTube, and his site, Cinemassacre.com, has garnered much attention from the likes of gaming conventions, movie fans, and scours of others just wanting a quick laugh and a trip back to memory lane.

The main premise of the show is that an angered, glasses-wearing, foul-mouthed, stereotypical nerd reviews a series of old video games (mostly from the NES era of gaming), and goes on a mad rant every time...well, anytime he runs into something worth complaining about. Many would argue that the charm comes from being taken back to those crappy, yet nostalgic NES titles that were apart of most of our childhoods...games like "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles", "The Karate Kid", "Friday the 13th", "Top Gun"...the list goes on and on. With over 50 installments, filmmaker James Rolfe covers a lot of ground, with a flare of creativity and humor.

The show is pretty hardcore...he's most notable for using tons of vulgarity. However, many would also argue that his use of language comes off like that of a celebrated comic. His onslaught of made-up terms and catch phrases ("Shit load of fuck", "Cowa-fucking-piece-of-dogshit", and "I'd rather get 69ed by a grizzly bear", to name a few) are reportedly used by a lot of the members in his fan base. Not to mention that each episode starts off with an insanely catchy "Angry Video Game Nerd" theme song that has probably found its way onto a couple of iPods.

The show started back in 2006, when as a joke, James Rolfe sat down in front of a lone video camera and recorded a review to a classic Konami NES game, "Castlevania II: Simon's Quest". It was loved by his friends, and was followed by an even angrier "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" review, a game which he continues to rip apart, two years after the fact. Once he published his "Angry Nintendo Nerd" videos online, they brought on a slew of requests to make more reviews, and the rest is history.

Throughout the series, James began giving the episodes cinematic flares. He's had cameos from everyone from Jason Voorhees to Freddy Krueger, to Bugs Bunny and Spider-Man. The comedy was different in every episode, so you never quite know what to expect. On occasion, he'll even change it up, reviewing an old or upcoming movie, or shedding light on some obscure pieces of history: see his "Atari Porn" video to see what I'm talking about.

AVGN also has special Halloween episodes, and episodes created for special events. For the recent release of "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull", he reviewed the old trilogy of Indiana Jones games, for the Atari and the NES respectively. He continues to do the reviews at a pace of about two a month, all of which can be viewed on his website, Cinemassacre.com.

I recommend the show to anyone who wants a good laugh, and anyone who wants to be severely entertained. Below is one of his episodes.
