Holiday Gift for Animal Advocate: Mark Twain’s Book of Animals
posted October 24, 2009 - 3:20pmNobody doesn’t like Mark Twain, aka Samuel Clemens, but there were lots of people Twain didn’t like, e.g., cockfighters, hunters, and vivisectionists. He was a social revolutionary and one of the pioneer proponents of animal advocacy in an era when kids, women, blacks, dogs and horses were routinely abused and destroying wildlife was the American way. He was also an ardent Darwinian, one of the first public figures to embrace evolution.
Mark Twain scholar Shelley Fisher Fiskin, along with illustrator Barry Moser, has just published “Mark Twain’s Book of Animals” about this lesser-known animal-lover aspect of Twain, as found in his own writings. It’s a gorgeous and inspiring book that you can buy for under $20, and it will be treasured by the animal activist in your family or social circle (everybody knows one).
