Answer to our problems
posted July 13, 2008 - 12:22amI know there are a lot of people suffering in this world--people who don't have blankets to cover themselves at night, children who work slave labor 20 hours a day, kids who are sold into prostitution, people who don't expect to live much longer because of starvation...which makes me think twice before I complain. Especially when there's nothing to complain about. Except for issues of the heart. Those kinds of complaints are real because they reflect raw emotions...however, they may not be valid because the heart, being deceptive, creates overblown drama.
It's kind of like the girlfriend that gets jealous that her boyfriend is setting time to have brunch with his best girl friend. Although the boyfriend has been platonic with the girl for years, his girlfriend just rages with jealousy and brokenheartedness.
Or it's like the wallflower at the party who feels left out, while the social butterflies mingle easily, and give life to the party.
Or someone who feels worthless because he used to be in such great shape, but now is fat and therefore feels ugly. Or someone who feels ashamed and unconfident. Or someone who feels untalented, unskilled and unfit for any job for which he would like to apply.
Or someone who feels too loserish to win over the girl he likes...or someone who feels inferior to her boyfriend.
Or someone who feels rejected/neglected/ditched by friends.
Many people who face these kinds of problems go see counselors and take medications. But then they may get too comfortable to face their reality, and hate it enough to change. Counselors are paid to listen nonjudgmentally. They are paid to be a friend. Sad...that someone has to buy their friends. Certain antidepressants, I'm afraid, only give a false sense of peace. Therefore, people don't see their situations as desperate enough to desire change.
Is "pray to God about it" the answer to these problems? I think that God will NOT necessarily change things for the better by our prayers. I think He will, instead, allow us that yearning for better days...and thus hope, and not give up. Nothing is so dismal that hope cannot defeat. Once we have hope, we have the fuel to do something, or at least imagine something better. Also, the cool thing about being down in the dumps emotionally is that there's usually no way to go but up. So I say, "pray to God about it, but don't expect Him to change things...just expect a change of attitude."
