Anywhere I Lay My Head - Scarlett, where have you gone to?
posted June 2, 2008 - 2:42amI am trying to get through Scarlett Johansson's debut album, "Anywhere I Lay My Head" it's a Tom Waits cover album for the most part. Trying being the operative word here.
I wish it wasn't her trying to be a female Tom as opposed to embracing his rebellious, grainy nature. I love Tom. Scarlett, in most respects is a decent actress, and as an actress she should know not to try to improve on perfection, rather to put her own personal spin on what's already been done.
She's got a low-fi, Sinead O'Connor.. not range but FEELING to this. I can't say if I like it. I can't decide. I don't particularly care for her voice at all, there's too much double vox, almost an echo through everything, and sometimes it sounds like the producer tried to auto tune her, then dropped a lot of the high's out, it's tingey... is that a word? I know she has this sultry voice, but I can't get over the fact that I feel like she couldn't have cared less that she was in the studio, spit out one take and thought it was gold.
It sounds like I could have went into my bathroom (which has amazing acoustics) and recorded this myself.
Scarlett I love you, but please stick to your guns. Both of them.
I just can't like it. I love the original too much to enjoy what this is. I think I was hoping for something different.
I didn't get it.
I guess I am too hard to please, to picky to choose..
I know what I like and this just can't be it.
So sorry ScarJo
