Apple Pushes Innovation...off a cliff.
posted September 13, 2006 - 2:45amApple announced they will begin selling Disney movies through iTunes. Wow, that's so ingenious.
Since Mr Jobs is on the board at Disney I wonder why they cut the deal? They've stated that around 75 films will be available from the Disney group of studios. The films will sell for $12.99 on pre-order and $14.99 after the release date. But does that mean new releases on DVD or new releases on iTunes? Because they could argue that all films being sold there are now 'new releases.' Wow a $2 price difference from pre-order to post-release. They really want to make some money on this deal. Library titles, which I take to mean older films that no one really wants, will sell for $9.99 each.
What's this all mean? Well it means you can pay more for some films on your computer than you would if you bought them on DVD. Most of the Library titles are probably selling for $5 over at Walmart and Best Buy this very instant.
It means you may or may not be able to actually make DVDs out of these films due to copyright rules and licensing. And I can see them NOT letting you do that because then you wouldn't need their nifty new device.
A device that will "make it easier for consumers to watch the videos on television." Dubbed the 'iTV' (give it a rest already Apple, what's next the iTootbrush?) it will connect to the television and allow wireless transfer of films and media files to the television. It is set to retail for $299
Wow you mean like the MediaGate MG-350HD or the D-Link DSM-320 (which my father uses)? These products have been around for more than a year now. But you don't even need one of those. All you need is a video card in your computer with output from an S-Video port or RCA plug and a cable to reach the television. These devices are only if you want to perhaps have the computer and television in different rooms or stream files to the television from multiple computers.
Also note that these other devices retail for around half of what the iTV will go for. While I have never owned a Mac I have always liked the way Apple looked at things. But that outlook is gone. Now they are becoming stale and predictable and I cringe every time I see another press conference is slated for them.
It's almost enough to make me want to iVomit all over the iToilet. Maybe they can cut a marketing deal with Pepsi or Coke and they can have iCola that will come in sleek little bottles that are hard to open and even harder to hold onto while drinking from.
