Are Desk Jobs Really All They're Cracked Up To Be?

Are Desk Jobs Really All They're Cracked Up To Be?

If you asked most people whether they would prefer a desk job to working at, let's say... McDonalds, most people would respond that they would rather have the desk job. Sure there are perks to have that big comfy chair in an air conditioned office, but there are also disadvantages too. Here are some pros and cons of working on your feet vs. working at a desk.

The pros of working a desk job as apposed to being on your feet all day seem obvious. First of all, desk jobs normally pay more and that's the biggest perk you can get when it comes to working in this world. Second, standing all day is rough on your body's feet, legs, knees, etc. It takes a while to get used to working on your feet. There are many aches and pains associated with working on your feet that make any desk job seem more desirable. Those two factors alone seem to make the appeal of working in an office worth the hype. After all, why would you want to stand around and be achy all the time for less pay? It just doesn't make sense. Another great perk about desk jobs is that it is much easier to slack off with them. With jobs that require the worker to be on their feet there is no time for sitting down to take a break. And if they do sit down for even a minute it makes them look very lazy. With desk jobs you can slack off for a few minutes and nobody will really ever notice.

But there are many pros to working on your feet that most people don't even think about. For one thing, time seems to go by much quicker when you are up and moving around all day. When I had a desk job I couldn't stand how slow time seemed to go. I spent a lot of time watching the clock which seemed to be moving slower and slower as days went by. Jobs that require standing normally include cleaning, dealing with the public (customers), or some other type of service. All of those things get your mind and body moving and keep your eyes from staring at each tick of the clock. Time seems to go by much faster when you are occupied with physical work.

The other benefits of working on your feet all day? The exercise. Standing and moving around is great exercise in a society where people are conditioned to sit around on their ass all day. It helps to burn off calories and keeps you feeling a little younger. One other nice benefit is being forced to stay awake. Sitting at a desk all day can make one very drowsy. Working on your feet forces the body to keep alert which may in turn make you do a better job.

Whether you like working on your feet or sitting at a desk, both have their positive and negatives. Go with what suits you. Although the money usually associated with desk jobs is normally what most people strive for, you might find that working at a desk bores you to death.
