Are we about to go to war in Iran for real?

Are we about to go to war in Iran for real?

This may be way out in left field, but it has enough of an element of truth to be plausible. An e-mail came through my inbox that made me consider the conspicuous reticence of the Democratic Party-controlled Congress to impeach President Bush and Vice President Cheney.

Think about the implications of all of the Executive Orders that Bush has signed over the past seven-plus years and the current state of our economy and also that of the situation in the Middle East.

What would happen if the Democrats and the rest of Congress went ahead with bona fide impeachment proceedings and showed what really happened over the past several years under George Bush? Isn't it quite possible that a backed-into-the-corner Bush-Cheney team would declare martial law, suspend the fall elections, and do away with Congress?

While it seems highly unlikely (and maybe even far-fetched) that it would happen given the way things are in our country, at present, do any of us really know for sure how close we are to martial law for the flimsiest of pretexts? Think about the laws that were passed just after 9/11 which Congress was not even allowed to read before voting on it. The original Patriot Act was past, what, 12 days after 9/11. That's way too short of a time to put a major bill before Congress, which means that it was written long ago and just waiting for the right time to bring it out.

Wouldn't it also stand to reason that there are other similar, perhaps more sinister bills sitting in someone's desk drawer just waiting for the right time to put it before Congress?

Think about Iran. Even according to Bush's own CIA's National Intelligence Estimate, Iran does not have nor is she pursuing nuclear weapons. The IAEA confirms this. Iran's own fundamentalist Islamic doctrine supports this. Yet, Bush is chomping at the bit to attack. There is a large carrier battle fleet currently in the Persian Gulf--the largest such battle fleet since Gulf War I. The Russians are engaged in Georgia and the Chinese are hosting the Olympic Games, which means Iran's two closest allies are distracted. Israel just completed a series of war games to simulate attacks on Iran. The stock market is going up when it should be going down, way down. Several Internet companies who sell all manner of survival food have reported that the U.S. government has purchased everything they have for sale in way of long-term storage food.

What may happen in the next days, weeks, or months (anytime before the November elections) is that there will be a false flag event on U.S. soil or against a major U.S. naval vessel in the Middle East, either of which will be blamed on Iran much like 9/11 was blamed on Saddam Hussein.

I pray that I am wrong and that the cause of peace will triumph and I encourage the rest of you to maintain prayers and positive energy for a peaceful solution to the Middle East situation. There is way too much riding on it not to do anything.

Attack was more than friendly fire

Even if we are to assume--for the sake of argument--that Israel made a legitimate and honest mistake, that doesn't allow for the fact that both the torpedo boats and the warplanes strafed lifeboats put into the water and shot at anyone who ventured into the open. The four 50-cal machine gun mounts were disabled by the warplanes and the Liberty carried no offensive armament. Even the firefighting crews struggling to save the ship had to abandon their efforts because the Israelis continued to shoot at them and also put holes in the firehoses. AND the Israelis dropped napalm on the ship. In friendly fire engagements, the shooting party does not continue an attack over two hours and machine gun survivors in the water. Until the U.S. government releases everything it has on the incident, I will continue to believe that there is more to the story than the official version, especially since there are too many unanswered questions about what took place AND the Israelis initially even admitted culpability--a culpability which they reversed just days later. That I am no fan of the apartheid state of Israel is no secret, but there is too much going on to simply let this story vanish into the dustbin of history. DO YOU HAVE THE WRITE STUFF?

Well, the facts still

Well, the facts still remain: The USS Liberty was in an area that was supposed to be clear of any U.S. vessels. The Israelis attacked the ship. (How were they supposed to know that it was a U.S. ship when they were told there weren't any in the area? Maybe they thought the markings were not legitimate.) They promptly apologized to American officials that were in Israel. The supporting aircraft was called off because the attack had ceased and the Israelis were in contact with American officials in Israel at the time. (It took the aircraft over an hour and a half to even reach the area because of how far away the rest of the fleet was and because it was a war zone.) This is not based on one source. I gave you that source because the documents were the actual transmissions from the Liberty about their location and from multiple communications to the Sixth Fleet about their operational areas. Mistakes happen all the time, especially in war. Friendly fire incidents aren't caused by purposely targeting your allies - they are usually caused by confusion in the midst of battle. What I'm trying to understand is, why do you automatically assume that these aren't merely mistakes - that there must be some ulterior motive? And this is just one of many incidents in which you'd rather believe that some evil plan is the actual cause or purpose of the event. *If you're interested in reading my articles, Click Here.

USS Liberty

Publius, do you honestly believe that your single source has every document related to the USS Liberty or just those declassified in support of the official cover story? Here are some sources that bring to light other aspects of the story that are inconvenient to the "whoops, our bad" official story. USS Liberty Memorial Background from War Crimes Report, with footnotes Photos taken aboard USS Liberty DURING THE ATTACK, showing that the attacking Israelis were more than close enough to the ship to identify it. War Crimes Committed Against U.S. Military Personnel, June 8, 1967, with witness statements The official Naval Board of Inquiry transcript relating to the investigation was denounced as a fraud by the JAG officer who was responsible for certifying its authenticity. The fact that Israeli Reconnaissance aircraft made over 8 passes over the USS Liberty and even circled the ship before returning to Israel and using Jane's Fighting Ships to confirm that the ship was American proves that Israel knew what they were doing. The fact that the first attack waves of Israeli warplanes targeted the bridge and communications equipment shows that they wanted to cut off the ship from the outside world. It was only the cobbling together of different equipment that the crew was able to send a distress call at all. Also, considering that the attacking warplanes and torpedo boats machine gunned three lifeboats put over the side and anyone who ventured topside shows that survivors were not wanted. The U.S. government has only released and declassified documents that fit into the official version of events. To date, the USS Liberty is the only US naval ship to have been attacked without a thorough investigation, the recall of US warplanes from the USS America and USS Saratoga from assisting a US naval ship under attack is without precedent in American history, the surviving crew members are still under orders not to discuss publicly what they experienced during the attack. So, no, Publius, I respectfully disagree that this was some simple mistake. No Israeli was ever brought up on charges for their role in the attack and the United States government has yet to fully declassify all documents relating to the attack. If there was nothing to hide, then there would be no problem coming clean. DO YOU HAVE THE WRITE STUFF?

jdub...Why do you insist on

jdub... Why do you insist on claiming that every mistake must be a "false flag" operation? The incident with the USS Liberty was due to many reasons. First of all, the ship was only about 15 miles off the coast of the Sinai Peninsula at the time of the attack. (The first coordinates sent out during attack were 31.23N by 33.25E.) On June 7, the entire Sixth Fleet was instructed to remain at least 100 miles off the coast of Egypt, Israel, and Syria. But on June 5th, our U.N. ambassador "had stated at the U.N. that no U.S. Navy ships were within 350-400 nautical miles of the UAR/Israel area." - Source: USS Liberty Chronology of Events Secondly, Israel was in the middle of a war with their neighbors, including Egypt - where the USS Liberty was sitting just off the coast. In the confusion of war, from aircraft high above, it's not exactly easy to identify the markings - and again, it was 15 miles off the coast of their enemy when they were under the impression that no U.S. vessels were anywhere near the area. Thirdly, if their intent was to bring us into the war by trying to make it look like our ship was sunk by their enemy, why would they approach close enough to be clearly identified as Israeli aircraft and vessels? I'm not sure why you choose to get your information from sources other than the actual transmissions and declassified documents/reports from personnel directly involved, but it seems to not benefit you when you do it. *If you're interested in reading my articles, Click Here.

Iran hasn't been languishing under a decade of sanctions, either

Iran will kick our backsides in a conventional war and they do have major leverage with their control over the Straits of Hormuz. With U.S. troop commitment in Iraq and Afghanistan, there are no ground troops left for any meaningful invasion of that country either. Given the size of Iran, the only realistic shot the U.S. has at maintaining air supremacy over Iran safely is the use of tactical nukes at key locations, which Bush has refused to take off the table. Given the fact that there is absolutely no credible evidence that Iran has nuclear weapons or that she poses a threat to anyone, any military action against Iran is a criminal act of war. Even when Israel is demanding that the U.S. enforce a military blockade of Iran, blockading ports is still an act of war. I've been through the Straits of Hormuz and we at heightened alert just because the navigable waterway is less then the Straits' 12 mile width. Since the Iranians have upgraded from their Chinese-made Silkworm anti-ship missiles, their missile batteries can sink even our largest aircraft carriers. Considering a Nimitz-class carrier carriers over 5000 missiles and crew, it is exactly that kind of false flag sinking that can cause an national outrage that drags us into war. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, and other high-ranking military members flew to Tel Aviv to speak with their Israeli counterparts. What they talked about was the Israeli attack on the USS Liberty 41 years ago and how the Israelis better not conduct another false flag operation against the US Navy to get us to attack Iran. (For those who never heard about it, the USS Liberty was a US naval vessel that was in international waters off the coast of Egypt during the Arab-Israeli Six Day War. Assigned to electronic surveillance, the ship came under attack by Israeli warplanes and torpedo boats, who attacked the ship for over two hours, although the ship was clearly a US warship flying the American flag. Although the Israelis claimed "mistaken identity", common sense, survivor testimony, and the fact that LBJ ordered the aircraft carrier, USS America, to not launch aircraft to protect the American warship, lead one to see this as something more than a simple mistake. 34 sailors lost their lives that day. The false flag operation was supposed to sink the ship and kill the entire crew and blame it on the Egyptians to draw the US military into the fight on Israel's side. On the part of killing the whole crew, survivors abandoning ship were strafed in the water by Israeli warplanes.) Israel is desperate to have us attack Iran and will stop at nothing to get us to do so, even attacking us directly and shifting the blame on Iran. Google: USS Liberty 1967, King David Hotel July 1946, bombing of the U.S. consulate in Alexandria, and Israeli involvement in US bombing of Libya in 1986 for other Israeli attacks and false flags on her "allies" to get them to do her bidding. DO YOU HAVE THE WRITE STUFF?

Possibly, very possibly jdubhub

Not long ago an Israeli source in the news, I believe it was on msn/nbc, said that they are perdicting Bush would probably attack Iran between November and January. Bush doesn't want to throw a wrench into the Presidencial campaign, so he will wait till after the elections. So we wil see what reasons the government will bring us on this one if they do. Let's hope if they do that they don't mess it up. I don't want to see us go to war with another country, but if we do God help us if we fail. Iran is not as stupid as we think. I believe they are playing us like a cat does with a very fat mouse.
