Are Writing Contests Beneficial to a Freelancer's Career?

Many freelance writers wonder whether or not it's worth their time to participate in writing contests. Some view them as unecessary; others view them as people trying to get free work. Whatever your view, there are some considerable reasons to partake in these competitions, especially if they are conducted by reputable companies.

Why Writing Contests?

Writing contests are an excellent way to see how you measure up against other professional writers. Even if you don't win, there's quite a bit you can learn from the person who did. Analyze successful writers. There's something that they are doing that genuinely works. Rather than becoming jealous or angry, be glad that they won. Now you've got a great example to follow.

Don't be discouraged if you don't win the first few contests you enter. Even some of the best writers don't win every contest. Winning contests is more about the style of writing that the contest judge likes, unfortunately. However, it is still heavily skill-based.

If you do win a writing contest not only is it something to brag about but it looks wonderful on a resume. Companies like to see people who strive to be on top and you're well on your way if you win a contest.

Choose Writing Contests Carefully

While there may be plenty of writing contests out there, only choose contest that are conducted by companies or individuals who are reputable. It's not going to look very well on your resume if you state that you won a contest conducted by a guy or a website that no one has ever heard of. Helium holds great contests along with other reputable websites. From a professional writer's standpoint, furthering my career be it through contests or projects, is very much worth my time.
