Many people are fearful of doctors and dentists and avoid medical treatment and procedures because of their fear. In fact, 10 percent of the population has what is know as needle phobia. This a relatively new diagnosis recognized by the American Psychiatric Association. However, the consequences of this phobia can be very serious since many needle phobics avoid medical care altogether.
