Are You Drinking Your Calories
posted June 6, 2008 - 12:41amEach day we consume a wide range of food and drinks. Some of these things are good for us and some not so good. All of them are adding calories to our daily diets. Few people realize the amount of calories that they drink (after all, they aren't eating them). If you are one who consumes a lot of beverages, then you may want to see if you are consuming too many calories in your fluids.
Soda. One of the huge killers for a lot of people is soda. Few people realize how much soda they really consume and how many calories can be in that soda. On average you want to figure you get about 100-150 calories per 8 ounce serving of soda. That means when you get that large at Burger King you may be consuming as many as 300-600 calories in soda alone. Diet soda has fewer calories, but there are also some other health issues that may be associated with diet soda. It is best to cut back and drink it only every now and again as a treat.
Coffee and Tea. While neither coffee or tea contain calories, many of us forget to pay attention to what we put into that coffee or tea. Many of us load it with sugar and even add things like heavy cream or half and half which can add the calories. Top it all off with getting a latte now and then and you are talking about lots of calories. If you are one that can't drink it black, try it with less sugar and skim milk. If you love your latte then go with sugar free syrups (if you get a flavored one) or sweetener and skim milk. If you are enjoying something at a coffee shop, always skip the whipped cream!
Sports Drinks, Energy Drinks, Flavored Waters, and Even Vitamin Water. There are a lot of drinks on the market, many of which claim to be good for us (sports drinks and vitamin waters). Often these fancy and tasty drinks are hiding calories you probably aren't even thinking about consuming.
Juice. You will want to watch the amount of juice that you are consuming as well. Many of us drink our fruits and veggies in juice rather then eating them. You should make sure that any juice you drink is 100% juice and not loaded with sugar. You should also be aware of how much juice you are drinking.
Milk. Sure, milk does a body good, but if you need to lower the amount of calories or fat in your diet then milk can be one that adds a lot of weight to what you are drinking. It is simple, if you are trying to maintain your weight or loose weight, drink fat free milk.
Adult Beverages. Many of us have connected the amount of calories in beer mainly because of "light" versions. However, there are a lot of calories in alcoholic drinks of all sorts. Whether it is liquor, beer, or wine these drinks have their weight in them. If you are going to consume then make sure you are drinking lots of water in between each drink. This will help you slow down. Have one or two instead of three or four. And make sure you are doing it only in moderation (after all we have all heard of the beer belly!)
What should I drink!?! Now that you are looking at eliminating a good amount of the things you love to drink you may be asking, "Then what's left!?!" Well, in reality you should be drinking water. Lots of water. Water is something the body needs a lot of, but many of us don't drink enough water. You should be drinking about 1/2 of a gallon of water each day. Many of us will grab something else whenever we can to satisfy our thirst when in reality the thirst is there from needing water. Additional studies show that many of us also eat thinking we are hungry when we are really just thirsty. So, start chugging the water.
I don't like water. Maybe it is the toddler in us that got juice when he or she threw a fit that makes it easy for us to point blank decide we don't like water and don't want to drink it. Well, it is still good for you. However, if you have a hard time putting it away like you should then add a little bit of lemon juice or lime juice (both available for very inexpensive prices). This adds a lot of flavor and not a lot of calories.
Changing how and what you drink can lower your daily caloric intake by a lot (depending on your current habits). If you are looking at maintaining or loosing weight then it is a good idea to work toward loosing all those drinks that just don't add a lot of value to our lives, and watching those which are healthy for us as well. Two thousand calories a day is a great way to live, but not easy to do when you are drinking hundreds or even thousands a day (yep some people really do drink thousands of calories a day!)
