Ask a question, fool for once. Never ask, fool forever.

Ask a question, fool for once. Never ask, fool forever.

I once read an article which mentioned the title of this post. Since then, I have been trying to follow this rule.

Ever wondered whether or not to ask a question, or questions? Afraid being called stupid or foolish?

Thinking back, I have been a fool for uncountable times. Undeniably, practising this phrase is easier to say than to do. People tend to avoid from asking stupid questions and at the same time, protecting his or her pride as to not be branded as ‘stupid'. But who are the ones to define ‘stupid questions'? Everyone's knowledge is of different area, as well as the use of memory.

Honestly, sometimes, I prefer not to ask if I know that the person I am dealing with will say something bad or even laughing out loud when I ask. This may be an excuse but I would rather ask other people or seek for the answer myself.

At work, I react differently. I listen carefully and jot down the things which I do not understand. I will then proceed to gather information and seek for the answer myself. In order to get more details, I will then ask. I believe that this is a good way in preparing myself to deal with something which I do not know rather than asking questions blatantly or even pretending to be jack of all trades.

How to deal with whether to ask or not to ask is not that important as long as we have the initiative to find out. Of course, there are a lot of factors involve a simple thing like in this case, asking a question; factors such as timing, priority, people and etc. However, it will never be too late to ask but be a fool forever if you never ask.
