Attention Xomba CIGARETTE SMOKERS! Your Smoking Story! Tell us...

I've read several stories about those who smoke cigarettes. I've heard the bad. I've heard the good. I've heard about President Obama smoking one occasionally. We've all heard it all.

As smokers we have been pointed at, yelled at, pushed into the cold, listened to complaints, have had people wave their hands as they've walked by us, and witnessed others cross the street to avoid us.

Laws have been passed, fines have been issued, prohibitions have been implemented, boundaries have been drawn, lawsuits have been filed and won, taxes have been raised.

Now, why don't all of us Xombie smokers tell our story and include whether you like it, don't like it, want or don't want to quit, reasons why you smoke, and how you started.

And let's hear from smokers. No band-standing just for pointing fingers.

I'll begin.

Until I started writing this I thought I started at 47, but, it turns out I started at 42. It was Christmas Eve 1993. A good friend of mine worked at the Incline Village (Nevada) 7-11 Store. I was driving my taxicab that night. I had stopped for a cup of coffee.

As I walked in my friend says “here, Merry Christmas!” He handed me a little plastic tube slightly bigger than a regular cigarette (i thought it might be a joint - but I remembered we were in Nevada where a seed gets you 60 days), and a box of chocolates. I said, “oh, I don't smoke.” He smiles and laughs and says, “well, this is a special cigarette (I was still thinking pot). It's made in Indonesia. Go ahead and keep it, and the coffee is free!”

I put the single cigarette up over my visor and there it stayed until New Year's Day, 1994. At 6am in the morning I got a call from the Cal-Neva Hotel/Casino for a fare to Sacramento, California. The California - Nevada state line goes right through the west end of the Cal-Neva. Slot machines line the Nevada side of the line, and the hotel desk is on the California side. Quite a unique place. The Cal-Neva is one of the places that Frank Sinatra's Rat Pack liked to come and stay.

I picked up my fare and we headed west to Sacramento, California's capitol. Because of the high mountain passes the California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS) uses cannons to blast avalanche dangers from above the heavily traveled mountain passes of the Sierra Nevada mountains. When this work is in-progress all traffic is stopped, sometimes for long periods.

I had offered to turn around and go back to Incline, but, my customer said “no let's wait and you can keep the meter running (gosh, what a deal - keep the meter running).” After 2 ½ hours my customer mentions he's going to stretch his legs and smoke a cigarette. I reached up to get a pen from my visor and the cigarette in the tube fell in my lap.

I opened it, loved its smell (cloves and tobacco), tasted the end of it, and lit it!
It tasted really good. Two-hits later I was dizzy. It took me a whole week to smoke that one cigarette.
Djarum Clove non-filtered cigarettes. I smoked them until an new law went into effect in Oregon on January 1, 2007. On that date no cigarettes could be sold in Oregon unless they were self-extinguishing. Well, so much for my favorite cigarettes. Yea, they sell them in Washington, 20 miles north, but, I never go to Washington.

So, I started rolling my cigs, still non filter. I do believe stress causes more smoking. I know I should stop, but, life, these days, for me, is just not quite the right time. I don't smoke around children or schools. I support the new higher taxes, and would like to see a day where cigarette are no more.

So, there's my story.

Man, six to seven packs!

I can't imagine being able to ride a bike with such a heavy smoking habit. I smoked less than half-a-pack and noticed a marked difference in my lung capacity. Yeah, I can imagine his temperament was not too pleasant after going cold turkey. Some years ago, John Mellancamp had a heart attack after years of smoking five packs-a-day. Apparently, it wasn't enough to curb him of the habit for good. He just cut down. Nicotine is more addictive than heroin, I've heard. ↑ Grab this Headline Animator

Smokers regrets

Well gosh, I feel like a heel. I startd smoking regularly at the ripe young age of 16. My first cigarrette though was in the 6th grade. I took it from my mom's pack to school and a friend and I went out into "the field" and shared it. We continued going to school early for the smoke for about a month until a teacher caught us and sent notes home to our parents. When I was 16 most of my friends smoked, so I just started too. Not from peer pressure, just out of boredom and curiosity. Both my parents smoked until 1980 when my mom had her first heart attack followed by a quadruple bypass. They disapproved of smoking and lectured me often after that. I have tried to quit many times and would like to quit now. I keep telling myself today is the day and then go out and have a smoke, changing the day to tommorrow. I don't smoke in the house nor while working. I don't smoke around non-smokers either. I have just recently stopped smoking at family functions as well. But, when I'm at home...I smoke about 1 pack every 2 to 3 days. I also do not like the taste or smell of cigarrettes, so I would have to say, the addiction to the nicotene has a strong hold on me. MJ - Sending happy thoughts and Smiles! Smoking, riding bicycles, and running

I worked with a guy by the name of Alan several years ago. We became roommates. Alan smoked -- get this -- 6 to seven packs per day!!!!!!! He also believed in exercise and regularly ran and used his bicycle, and, yes, he smoked while he ran, up hill sometimes! I had never witnessed anything quite like Alan! I helped him with financial aid and getting into community college. Alan took some health classes. And, his girlfriend told me, recently, that Alan quit cold-turkey! I bet he was a lot of fun to be around.... God, bless you, Alan, where-ever you may be... "It does matter what you believe, but, what you believe does not matter if you do not act upon your beliefs." My smoking story

Well, I smoked a little in my late teens and early 20s. But then I got into cycling heavily, so the smokes had to go. Unfortunately, in 2001, I picked up the habit again after starting a relationship with a woman who smoked. Oddly enough, I continued to ride -- a little. However, I'd been tapering off my physical activity slowly over the previous few years. In August of last year, I decided it was time to give up the habit for good. I did so with the help of a Swedish oral tobacco product called snus. It's a ground tobacco, with salt, water and various flavors added. In Sweden, it's very popular with people of all walk of life; unlike in The U.S., where smokeless tobacco is mostly associated with rural folks. Anyway, I'm only using about 3 little portions per day, now. With any luck, I'll be totally nicotine free by fall. :) ↑ Grab this Headline Animator

I've Stopped Smoking but not disliking Sanctimonious Tosh

I've stopped with a little help from Champix - though others have tried the same and committed suicide so PLEASE think on before trying that. I heard a story from a bloke who was doing well giving up with Champix until on holiday and a row with his son. His reaction was to self-harm and he punched himself in the face so hard that he broke his finger. What motivates me is a hatred - and I mean HATRED of the tobacco companies. I don't want to give them another penny or a single cent. How come other sellers of drugs are jailed, their assets stripped and compensation paid to their victims? I want them - the tobacco companies - to give me back every last penny I've spent on cigarettes plus interest. I could retire and live well on it - AAAAAhhhhhhhhhhhhhhg! That thought made me really angry. I really resent people who don't understand addiction and preach to smokers too. They should count their blessings that they never had to deal with this addiction - known to be more pernicious than heroin - rather than get off with their sanctimonious, self-righteous spoutings. I've stopped but if I ever start sounding like them - shoot me. +1 JOIN XOMBA HERE FREE Xomba is an international online community and anyone can join. StReSs is why I have ever smoked!

+1 I am ashamed of it, but yes, StReSs is the reason I started smoking, and besides the nicotine addiction, stress is why I have had such a hard time (each time I've quit.) Stress is a horrible thing too!

They are SAFETY CIGARETTES!

Quite the opposite, Rych. Oregon's self-extinguishing cigarette Law requires all cigs sold in the state to automatically go out when they are set down, dropped, and/or left unattended. It was a boom for lighter companies like Bic.

What's a self-extinguishing

What's a self-extinguishing cig? Is that like a Marlboro in that if you're not fast it will smoke itself in two minutes? Join Xomba Here

Joseph--Interesting story.

Joseph--Interesting story. I remember smoking a few of those djarum's as probably the first cigarettes I smoked. I remember they tasted sort of like apple cider! Or at least they were kind of sweet and they made your lips tingle. They last forever too, so I can see how it took you a week to finish your first one. Cigarette Smoking: Xombie Smokers Tell Us Why You Smoke

From Evis T: "...Newsflash for you, people die every day from things just as bad as smoking. People die of heart disease brought on by an unhealthy lifestyle, lack of exercise, binge drinking and crap food..." My comment: I took a trip over to your site, and congratulations on a really great piece of writing!! It's focused and to the point, and, without a doubt, a joy to read. ____________________ It does matter what you believe, but, what you believe does not matter if you do not act upon your beliefs. you can not vote on the truth --Pope John Paul II, 1995
